Avy in Kilgore

Hey, just wanted to give everyone a heads up that we broke off a good size slide up in the Kilgore area yesterday in one of the chutes. I will post pics later, but please be extremely careful if riding in this area.

Sorry about the delay guys. Here is the pic. You can see the track going up the left side.

Hind sight is always 20/20, and I'm not picking on you at all but, someone was very lucky on that one. One more example showing how the snow just isn't fastened to the earth very well this year. Time isn't fixing the problem either.

Thanks for sharing. That particular photo hits home more than a lot of the others I've seen this year. Spooky

Where were you riding in the chute? I don't see any tracks.

Slide cleared off right to the ground. Scary.

Oh you were very very lucky. What a classic photo example and learning experience. You can look at the wind loaded spot right in the center of the slide once it's all slabbed off. You can see the type of terrain is a slide area.(After seeing the photo I would bet any amount of money that exact spot slides regularly....general clues... tree tops appearance and runout area plus the rock face of that part of the hill has no natural holding structure..Have you ridden that exact spot much and was that what you've seen?) Maybe wind and snow load conditions wouldn't be the same but I'd look at that spot and those results and be concerned with that climb.

Man so lucky you picked the left side as opposed to the loaded area or I bet it would have gone with you in the fold as opposed to after you passed. That same aspect higher and right is suspect too. Lucky that was small because if it hooked and took the entire aspect on around the hill would result in a MONSTER SLIDE with a bad trap and lots of times your buddys are watching from down there. YIKES!

Great report and photos...maybe you saved someones life! Thanks

Were about was that slide. I ride kilgore alot but that doesnt look familiar.

I wish I knew a little more about the area. This was my first time riding Kilgore. I know it was one of the last chutes we were in that day and it was also the furthest one west. There is a big bowl on the right side of this chute and that was the area we thought would slide. At the top you can see Jefferson. I will ask the guy we were with that knew the area real well as I know the peak had a name.
