Headed to the horns jan 23 for the first time, we got a guide but just wondered what if any avalanche danger was like out their and if we could rent beacons anywhere. I know you should always where one cause you never kno when it could happen, but does everybody where them around the horns?! we always where them at cooke and west yellowstone..jw

mmmmm not much avy danger in the horns. Rode there without a beacon for quite a long time. I wouldnt worry about it. But dont take my advice  You should always wear a beacon when riding. Sh*t happens.

check the wyoming section. there are a few pics of avy's in the horns. the people who say it doesn't happen there are full of it - i've seen hills slide out there just like anywhere else.

it isnt a bad danger.. but it still happens.. set off a couple small ones last weekend up there.. and have seen some bigger ones there in years past.. there was a kid from somewhere around here that got into one up there 4-5 years ago and got fully buried.. no beacon or anything.. but buddies got him out in time to revive him..

I say.. wear it.. and be careful..

I being from the area would also suggest wearing a beacon. It doest happen often but i have heard they are above average on snowfall and the wind always blows so prime wind load. I can give u the name of a few people to ask what it is like being in a avy in the horns. They were some of the lucky ones. Dont tempt fate. Always be prepared.

though rare avys doo happen in the horns---2006--my son set this off and it slides all the time--looks great :)till it lets go:eek:--went again a couple weeks ago

thanks for the input, maybe we'll try to round up a few beacons, i know a coulpe guys around who have them...thanks again

was up there two weeks ago and there were a few places that will come down, so watch it. the snow then was pretty good, found a lot of untracked boondocking have fun be safe

avy yes could happen in the horns but Hiting a rock and wrecking your sled will happen first.

The Big Horns has the biggest Cornices of anywhere I have ever ridden. If not careful about checking out some slopes from the side you could ride out on a cornice and be 10 to 20 ft over nothing 50 to 100 ft down! Other than that great place to play when plenty of snow. A GPS is very helpful as it has very few taller mtn peaks for reference so easy to get lost sometimes until you learn the area.

Good Luck

beacon

my buddy got caught in one there last weekend, i wasnt there but i was told it was a close call. just the back of his helmet was lucky to be showing to make it even quicker to find him than using the bacon.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the lodges rent beacons up there. There have been a lot of cornice break-off and some slides this year, but there is no end to the riding you can do without getting in places that are too bad. All the east facing slopes are loaded pretty heavy with a few of the narrow canyons being pretty spooky.

Lol, I should remember where that hill is, rolled my m7 down it last year. Just to the right of the first picture, was side hilling under the tree. :o Sled was fine, I got nailed by a running board.
