Avalanche bag

Did anyone who was on the scene at Boulder Mountain see any sledders who deployed either a Snowpulse or BCA safety balloon backpack? If so, (or if you deployed one) - what was your experience with it? I am very curious about this new technology.

the very question i wanted to ask, with that about of experienced riders out there , some must of had bags, anyone shed any light on this.

giddyup

I too am interested in this information.

However, one must keep in mind that the design of an avalanche airbag is to bring you to the top of the avalanche if you are sliding down the hill in the avalanche. The physics behind an avalanche called "inverse segregation" bring larger volume things to the top of the avalanche while the avalanche is in motion

If you are sitting at the bottom of a hill and deploy your airbag, the airbag will not bring you to the top of the avalanche.

That is certainly true, (that the bag is meant to be deployed when trapped in a moving avalanche; however even at the bottom, there would be some protection from head and neck trauma provided, I would think. I just think given the large numbers of people and the obvious number who had beacons, if anyone deployed a bag. I'd also like to know as much as possible about how many partial/full burials there might have been - sounds like, thankfully, it was mostly partials. Hope everyone recovers from their injuries and is back on their sleds and enjoying life, soon...

The technology is hardly new, ABS has had these available for several years. I'm sure that they would still be effective towards the bottom of the hill, if the snow is still moving, the physics are still in effect.

Yup, ABS mono came out in 1985.

:face-icon-small-froEarlier on that day some one pulled his as he rolled out one of the shoots that dumps on to the airport, as for Turbo I never saw one bag opened, 50% of the people had there packs and helmets off. A buddy of mine picked two avey bags out of the snow with now one in them 5 minutes into the search, they only work if you pull the handle and its strapped to your back!
