Avalanche Airbags - ABS food for thought

This year at the snowmobile shows we have been selling the refills for $25. That is for the new Yellow Canadian made canister & trigger.
The black canister & trigger refills go for $50. They are made in Europe so we have to send the empty back to Europe .

Our show special on the Dual Airbag packs has been 2 free refills with the purchase of any new ABS Vario, Escape or Freeride.

Yes the MONO Airbag is back. Here is a great opportunity for you guys to buy a ABS Airbag system with a proven track record and save some money. We have been selling the Mono at the shows for $700. Thanks to Gator for the picture of one in his post.

Thanks Keith, I will pick up a new can and handle at the calgary show

I want to apologize to RMX. I am sorry, I didn't mean to crap on your product or rain on your parade. It is a top notch product, I just feel they are overpriced at no fault of yours. I agree though, anything that can help save a life is worth it and good to you for helping educate the masses.

I also agree with sako. The abs is obviously the best and RMX is trying hard to sell his product in a world where other manufacturers are moving into his market. Just because someone is cheaper does not in any way mean it is less effective or that quality is sub par. Just look around this forum at klim vs tobe vs hmk.. ABS is a quality product and has the stats to prove it. But wait a few years and the others will have the stats as well. Either that or they will go away. Each different pack has its selling points IE different bag design, different charge mechanism. I think its great that we are starting to get a choice. I also think that price should come down now that others are out there making a new product. After all if I can buy a brand new laptop that absolutley makes the one I got 5 years ago look silly for less money it just shows that as technology progresses the prices come down. Also the competition has a lot to do with cost. Good on ya ABS for being there and saving lives. Keep making a great product and you will keep making big sales. People will be proud to own your gear. Others will be proud to own what they choose and can afford to buy. The comments about saftey being something you shouldnt skimp on should ring loud and true to everyone who rides in the mtns.

see the thing that I dont agree w in your post, is that Keith is trying to sell us HIS product
he is simply stating that facts about ABS - which can NOT be ignored
I am sure he is very aware that there are other products out there and now he has competition

but at the end of his post, he mentions that he wants you to feel confident and happy about your purchase, knowing all the differences between them

ABS is a leader in avalanche backpacks, because well let's face it - they were the only ones selling it
and YES, after a few years of actual real life testing and stats, companies like Snowpulse and BCA can too prove why THEY are the best

BUT, ask yourself this - do you want to be a statistic?

I sure don't, good or bad - I would hate to have to pull that cord anyday
but if I do, I want to know that there is a 98% chance I will see my baby girl and wife after im done riding this out

you simply cant compare ABS to "the others" like you can compare Kilm to HMK
were not talking staying warm and dry, were talking about being able to see tomorrow

Like Keith mentioned, buy what fits your budget and what you feel confident in buying
I dont believe that you or anyone CANT afford an ABS - I just dont
If you ride out west, you ride a mountain machine that is new, or if not new- has modded parts, had broken down and you have stayed in a hotel on a trip.

my suggestion - buy an avy pack this year, take one less trip, make 2 less "mods" or sleep in your truck instead of renting a hotel!! haha!

live to ride and see another day and get off your wallet (not you in general happylilcuss, everyone in general) :beer;

Enis dont take what I said wrong. I was not in any way bashing ABS. I think they are the bomb. I also agree that saftey shouldnt be looked at in a financial manner. Your right facts cant be ignored. However at one point abs didnt have the stats either. Yet there product was good and saved lives. I agree with keith that you should buy what fits your budget and makes you happy. I totally disagree that you cant compare hmk, klim to this situation. If you get stuck out overnight then your clothing can be as much a factor of saving your life as an avy bag could. The point of my post is simply that just because the others are newer to the market does not make them inferior. Time WILL tell but in the future you just may see that there way truely is better. As it sits now ABS IS THE BEST and because of this I would suggest buying there product.

Again please dont take the tone of either of my posts as being negative toward abs or negative in any matter. I agree with abs and think they have a superior product.

no worries bro, your tone was fine, im not one to start crap on an internet forum
let's just ensure that the public is aware that there are options and weighing them out is a great idea
hey man, A bag is better than NO bag

my opinion, lilke yours, is that ABS has a proven track record and the stats can't be ignored

I bought a freeride 4L at the vernon show but was not told about this 2 free refill deal? Will I be able to get this?

Disappointed.gif
Said it before too; but if the pack doesn't keep me on top of the snow, i'd rather have air in my little ice hole than an inert gas.
dunno.gif

I don't buy that little sales pitch at all. The air in your avy bag won't make any difference in keeping you alive. You'll have a nice little ice bubble full of CO2 around your head within minutes. You could have an oxygen tank on your back and it wouldn't make any difference. I'm not sure what you mean by the inert gas. Maybe referring to ABS but their avy bags don't leak like the Snow Pulse so its not like your going to be in a cloud of 100% nitrogen. Besides, air is 78% nitrogen anyway. A few more cubic feet won't kill ya.

Honestly, anything that helps you live is better then nothing regardless of which pack it is.

If you have the cash, buy the best. Otherwise buy what you can afford. People can say all they want "how much is your life worth" but in reality do what you can.

25$ for abs refill? When I bought mine they told me 170$ for refill but that they had some they would sell me for 100$ because I bought the bag from them. 25$ would be sweet!

What I wanna know is are the $25 refills on the ABS cannisters going to include the trigger? and if so will this be only available at the shows or can we get this deal online with an Exchange?

I have an ABS Escape 30 now and after looking at the Snopulse Highmark at the Denver show, the design of the pack (Far superior For My Needs/Wants)and the locally refillable cannister, I'm trying to sell my ABS to buy the Snowpulse. I would like to be able to test my pack at least every season and at $150 I can't justify it beyond checking the trigger and weighing the cylinder. @ $25 that's cheap enough to justify firing the pack off. I also made the investment at the time to buy a spare cylinder and trigger at the time of my purchase so I would have a spare in the case of an accidental trigger.

I am not sure why so many people are concerned w being able to test their avy packs every year.....really just curious not trying to be smart

ABS' stats say that 98% of people who pulled their cord survived
so....that being said, I am sure that everyone of those packs werent brand new that year and didnt fail

maybe Keith or someone else who sells these can chime in
what is the percentage of packs that fail, when the cord is pulled?
is it a god idea to "test" these packs every year and spend the "$XX" of dollars each year to do so????
or should you assume that your good to go??

Do you test your beacon to make sure it's pickin up your buddies, and that they can see your beacon? Or do you just "trust it works"? Check batteries when you turn it on? Make sure you've got shovel, probe, radio, water, food, etc before you leave the house?

Check tire pressure on truck/bike before a trip?

Or just trust they're all OK?

Things happen. I'd rather verify operation on everything at least once a year to make sure when I need something, it's going to operate as expected.

.

i met one of the BCA reps in edson at the sled shop there. He had BCA's newest pack with him and we got to talking. the canisters are going to be able to be filled by owner with air. He told me what PSI you needed but I forgot.

they were making some changes to the zipper pulls and some minor cosmetics.
did not seem as solidly built as the abs stuff...

What Mule said is what I have been thinking about as well. I like the thought of being able to test the bag each year before I head out west. But if it is going to cost a ton of money to replace everything then I may look into other options. For me I don't want to go into debt for toys. So I am saving for a pack right now just have not decided on which one. It may depend on how much money I can come up with before I head out for my trip in January. It is either ABS or BCA for me. BCA has not said when the packs are going to be released yet from what I have heard. If I decide to go with them and I cannot get it before I go then it is pointless to spend the money this year on a pack. Don't need a pack like that for MN, lol. My other problem is no one in MN sells these things so I can go look at them. The MN snowmobile show is really not a snowmobile show anymore and is moving to a way smaller place and is mixed with an ice fishing show (the fishing show is the main draw). So I doubt much will be there for snowmobiles and I was not able to go to Haydays this year. For me this is something I want and I just want to be comfortable with the decision I make.

From ABS's Website

Maintenance

Self check
• The ABS Avalanche Airbag is maintenance free if the following points are observed.
• Unfold both airbags at least once a year. We also recommend a yearly practice activation, preferably at the beginning of the season. The activation can easily be practiced on a safe site.
• Check the release valve in the black suction and release unit. Push the red button several times. It has to completely click back into place each time.
• Inspect the condition of the backpack straps, buckles, airbag compartments and Velcro closures on a regular basis.
• Check whether the puncturing unit which holds the cartridge is free of dirt
• The activation handle should easily fit into the coupler. You can add a drop of silicone oil to the coupler if you have problems removing the handle. A sample tube of silicone oil is included and can be ordered from ABS.
• Make sure that the full cartridge is screwed in tightly each time before using the ABS Avalanche Airbag.

Like Mule said, better knowing it's good to go than thinking it is and finding it's not the hard way.

Whats the "Snowest Price"?

You're the Canadian Dealer right?

I need a very minimum of 3 backpacks, and probably more like 7

The refill price includes a trigger.

Flange good information in your post.
One of the most repeated sales pitches we hear is: the rep told me that if I'm buried the bags will deflate and give me air to breathe.

I need to ad one more important point to the ABS pack maintenance. You need to weigh your canister to check that is full, without the cap. You will need a 1000 gram scale to do this. The canister needs to weigh within 5grams of the posted weight on the canister.
If you have a black canister the numbers can wear off the sticker, so write them down for future reference.

Portgrinder give me call next week.

We will be in Regina for the weekend if anyone want to come compare Airbags

I sent a pm and posted a message, I am unclear are you selling refills for 25$ regardless? If so I will take a couple.
