Just got finished changing spark plugs in the old f-150 with 5.4L engine. Some good engineering there I tell yah.Efficient or not bring back the ohv engines.

If your truck is an 05 or newer consider your self lucky you got them out. Theres a big problem with the plugs breaking off leaving only the ceramic in the head. Requires a special extractor set. Plus the prior years of the 5.4 are common for the plugs to blow themselfs out of the hole and since they have those Coil Over Plugs, it holds it down, jackhammering all the threads out. We have done a few repairs for the older ones but havent had the pleasure of the newer tritons yet.

Now there's the best reason I've heard yet for 'The automakers' to be broke! Maybe you just need an older truck so you can sit on the fender and reach all four per side without issues.

Sitting on the fender and changing plugs is what I was expecting, searching the internet and getting some pointers and directions is what I had to do.Who ever designed this crap should try fixing it for once.I am not a mechanic by no means but I bet they have never even owned a toolbox.

Tire pressure sensors are stupid

How 'bout this: I have a 2008 Chev 2500 (3/4 ton) Express cargo van provided my my employer. I took it to a oil change shop to get the oil changed. They checked the tire pressure. Supposed to have 50 in the front and 80 in the rears. They added air to get to spec. I watched him do this and saw the gauge and he did it correctly.

The computer then said the rears had 50 and the fronts had 80.

I had to take it to a Chev dealer to have the TPSs reset. What a waste of time and money. The Chev dealer wanted $54.50 to perform this task. I blew a gasket and they did it for free.

Technology gone wild!

Right around the time I stopped doing tier one design work for Ford they had at least 30% engineers from India. Walking around every time I went for my weekly PDC meetings in Dearborn. As far as the engine compartment, it was all about packing in all they could without much emphasis on what the mechanics had to go through to work on it. Tool clearance was a consideration but not a huge concern.

I know that first hand. Happened to a friend, $600 per plug. There is an over-the-fender repair kit that you can get. I also watched him change the plugs. I could have pulled the engine in my Brat and replaced it in the time it took him to dismantle half the engine.....sad. We then took a trip to the east coast and he blew a couple coils, another expensive deal.

Same as every industry I guess.Engineers and designers never consult with anyone like a mechanic or end user of their product on how to improve things. They all figure they are so smart and nobody can tell them anything. One would think that if you built something in 113 years or so you have the design perfected.

I love my job, I love my job, I love my job, I love my job
They say that if you say it enuff you will believe it :face-icon-small-con
Broken exhaust manifold bolts on the V-10's are fun too
