Assault steering post?

it's kind of alot of work to just change out the steering post but you have to be able to raise the motor up out of the way so you can get the steering rod nut off.

I think my post is bent so I posted a topic last week. Here is one of the answers I recieved.

What sled? When I bought my Dragon, it was doing that too. Ended up replacing the post and hoop. Hoop was the actual problem. On the dragon, the post just inserts into the bushing at the bottom. I was able to remove the bolt in the steering rod that goes under the motor and just lift out the post after removing the top mount. Dropped the new one in and bolted the rod back on.

Hoop was whole different bag of problems. It rivets to a couple of plates next to the side of the gas tank and bolts to the tunnel and running boards. Took the tank loose and slid it back. Getting the rivets to line up and the bolts through the tunnel was a real pain. Hoop was bent under the tank cowling and kind of hard to see. Give away was the post was not centered in the hole in the cowling. Big gap at the back and almost none at the front.

Hope this helps

He said he got it out without removing the motor, but I don't see how. I still can't find any bends in my steering hoop so I think it's got to be the post. I really don't want to pull the motor. If anyone knows a better way I'm all ears.

The posts are super week. Mine has broke in two different places. above the bushing and below the bushing. I have a buddy that owns a fab shop. we fixed it good so at least it wont break there again. If you just replace it with the oem part it will just break or bend again. stearing stems and motors what next ???

we ended up leaving everything on the motor and just enbolting the motor and lifting it a few inches to give us room so get the bolt, after some beer and lots of cursing we got the post out

2006 RMK 700 Steering Play

I have a similar issue. I don't think my post is bent but I have a lot of play in the steering. I can see the top post bushing and it's fine. I pulled my boots and all of the ski sterring components are fine. I think the problem is in the bottom post bushing or the connecting rod to the bottom of the post. I pulled the exhaust and cannot see that area. If I remove the gas tank can I get to it? Thanks in advance for any tips.

now we are having issues with getting the motor mounts back on, everything has something in the way...#%#@!!!!

rallard if you remove your plastic shroud that goes around the tank and remove your airbox you should be able to see it, the bottom connection is pretty much right under the motor

Braaap12, I removed the plastic around the gas tank and the airbox above the belt and still cannot see it. Does removing the gas tank help to get in there or at least see it on my 2006?

I have an 08' D7. I removed the throttle body and there is a straight shot to the lower conection on the steering post. Turn the skis as far left as possible and you will be able to remove the bolt, and slide the post out of its lower mount. You can do it without moving the engine.

Looks like the throttle body on the 08 D7 is behing the motor not in the front like on my 07 RMK. Is that correct? Does anyone know if I can get at the nut by removing my throttle body in front of the motor?

Did you have to pull the carbs, reeds, etc? Do you have to remove the lower bushing retention bolts to remove the post?

On my 08 800 I just removed the airbox and throttle bodies, then with a 9/16 stubby and a 9/16 socket on a long extension you can take the nut loose and lift the post right out.
