As if Cash For Clunkers wasn't costly enough, Cash For Refrigerators!

Who could make this crap up?

Latest in Stimulus: 'Cash for Refrigerators'

A $300 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances provides a glimmer of hope for beleaguered makers of washing machines and dishwashers, but it's probably not enough to lift companies such as Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR - News) and Electrolux out of the worst down cycle in the sector's history.

What industry is next for bail-outs?

I am now stupified! :(

Lets just hope the smart people stay away from the G.E./MSNBC brands.

The DC Elite just dont get it!

Buffett: U.S. Could Become Banana Republic

Wednesday, August 19, 2009 3:06 PM

By: Julie Crawshaw Article Font Size

Warren Buffett says the growing mountain of U.S. debt could turn the country into a banana republic.

“Unchecked carbon emissions will likely cause icebergs to melt,” Buffett writes in The New York Times.

“Unchecked greenback emissions will certainly cause the purchasing power of currency to melt.”

The U.S. economy appears to be on a slow path to recovery, Buffett notes, but “enormous dosages of monetary medicine continue to be administered,” creating an annual deficit more than twice any since 1920 aside from war-impacted years of 1942-1946.

Most of the effects of this are still invisible, but “their threat may be as ominous as that posed by the financial crisis itself.”

Congress, Buffett says, must end the rise in the debt-to-GDP ratio and bring U.S. growth in obligations back in line with U.S. growth in resources.

Even if much of this debt were covered by foreign investors and by Americans saving substantially more than they have done in years, Buffett estimates Treasury would have to find $900 billion to finance the remainder of the debt it is issuing.

“We don’t want our country to evolve into the banana-republic economy described by Keynes,” he says.

China reduced its holdings of U.S. government debt by the largest margin in nearly nine years in June, cutting its holdings by nearly 3 percent, according to data from the Department of Treasury.

In 2008, the Chinese increased their holdings in U.S. debt by 52 percent over 12 months.

new stainless kegerator, wow i luv The Obama and taking money from y'all to pay for my stuff, no that does NOT mean you don't have to pitch on beer at my house...

I believe there has been a handful of power companies already doing this as well as other incentives for some time. Rocky Mountain Power has had the refrigerator deal for a while. I'm not convinced this is anything new as of last week or that BO is directly behind it. Probably more of a green movement then BO handouts. :beer;

Note it says "Federal Program", THAT means a BO handout.

you know, there is one overriding problem with all the various cash for clunkers/refers whatever.

The only thing these programs do is take everyone who is on the fence and gets them to buy.
Take the clunkers program.
Now that everyone ran out and bought cars, how long of a dry spell are the dealers in for?
Same with the refer program. Once you get the ones who were already going to buy and the ones sitting on the fence, you are left with a long dry spell of no sales.
Looks great up front, but what follows isn't pretty.

I am glad you brought that up Ollie, They just sucked out most of the people that was going to buy within the next year. Welcome to the Dead Zone.

Anyone seen on the news Cash for Coffins yet?

I think we need to do a program for lawn mowers. There are so many old polluting mowers out there, we need to get them burning cleaner like the sleds. Get the E.P.A. involved. That way it might affect the greenies when they have to pay $1500 to $2000 for a walk behind.

OK, so the goverment is picking up a program that is already in place at the local level.

But that's the point.
It should be and only be at the local level.
My state doesn't do this non-sence and I don't like the fact the feds are stepping in and demanding I now pay for somebody else's fridge.

Yet again the feds are stepping on states rights and forcing us to pay for stuff they have no right to pay for to begin with.
