area closure for profit

Re. snowmobile area closure for profit using caribou herd population statistics.
As sledders we are getting slowly pushed out of our favorite riding areas and it is quite unfortunate that for the most part we have been just standing back and watching these closures take place. Some companies have been manipulating statistics, and government organizations to manifest their agenda which is to keep this back country closed to snowmobilers and maintain their profit (heli ski, cat ski tour operators) using Caribou as the catalyst to cause these area closures. It is quite obvious that buying trail passes and club memberships has not been enough to prevent these closures, we as sledders must form an organization in which we have a fairer say in these negotiations. I appreciate the efforts put forth by the clubs and associations in British Columbia and Alberta, but these clubs need a louder voice. There seems to be more power with one unified organization, which will require funding and cooperation from ALL mountian sledders, if we can spend tens of thousands of dollars buying accesories, performance parts, fuel, hotels, beer, we definetly can donate a small portion of this sport invested money to keep our sport alive. Web sites and forums, like this one, are a great place to get information out there and to gain support, also our sled manufacturers and after market part builders and suppliers are a great medium to convey information and get support. Is there any existing organization out there that I can get involved in to fight these closures for profit? Any comments please pm

iminent area closures

Weak! out of the 50 views of this topic no-one has anything to say, when your favorite riding areas get closed or down sized i'm sure you will still have nothing to say. It is no wonder that these tree huggers and heli-ski poeple can shut us out of these areas at their will with no opposition.

I totally agree with you....I am fascinated at times that the general consensus seems to be that land closure issues aren't a big issue with the majority of sledders out there!! It's only matter of time before all of our riding areas are taken away....and then it won't really matter what kind of stand we make then!! Just think. If all the people out there that bought sleds every year would also buy club memberships, we wouldn't be having this issue. Our voice would be heard loud and clear over the powers to be, and they wouldn't have anything to negotiate. Instead decisions are made and areas are closed. That's it, no discussion.

Yes, there are a few hard working, ambassadors for our sport that step up for our riding areas and try to negotiate and be the voice for the general population....but the powers to be are still looking at our club membership numbers and they are so low that it's a joke. When the areas are closed then there are also the few jerks that don't obey the closures and ruin it for everyone else when they close even more areas. I don't know what the answer is..... it will probably take losing the freedom to ride where we want to ride, when we want to ride for the majority to see what we could have fought for!!

I believe the dealerships should put in an honest effort, I have told the ones in my area to at least include a membership with every sled sold. 98% of sleds here are mountain sleds. If our area gets shut down it will hurt them the most.I have a budy that is too stubborn to buy a membership because he does not think you should have to pay to ride a snowmobile. Buy your memberships at a minimum so that we have a glimmer of hope to keep our area open.

50 views.......

I am not surprised at that figure at all. Commenting at a post will not keep land areas open.

The only thing to do is get involved and get others to show up at comment meetings, rally friends to do the same, write comments, get others to do the same, support organizations like SAWS, BRC..........etc....

I can understand people not commenting, I cannot understand NOT getting involved to keep our sport,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a sport....

They have closed most of our riding around here already. Most areas over 5500ft in elevation has been closed. If you don't think it will happen to you, then you are wrong! This is a dying sport and more need to be involved.

TOTALLY AGREED!!!

I had a guy tell me he would not buy a membership because he will not pay money to ride his sled in the mountains. $75 is a tank of gas...he then said they have said for the last 20 years that they would be shutting down our riding areas and have not yet. So I guess that means it can't happen!?

Down here in the USA there is quite a few organizations that are trying to fight the clousres. I don't know if there are any in Canada.

One thing i have seen with alot of the clubs is that they don't always work well together, which is to bad.

You guys are still missing the obvious. Vote out the democrats!!!!!!! The democrat party is right there along with the greenies supporting these land closures. A vote for a dem, any dem, is a vote for a greenie in the congressional leadership, committee chairs, judicial appointments, ect....They vote for their own, which is 99% anti-sledden. Shared access took a big hit on Tuesday. How many here complaining voted for your own land closures?
