Like the title says... any wheat farmers on the forums here?
Actual farmers of wheat... not relatives or friends of farmers.

Thanks, MH.

My niece is having some serious wheat allergy issues since returning from europe a year ago. Pretty darn serious and has had her hospitalized.

Over in Italy, where she eats a lot of pasta and bread, she had no issues... but after 4 months in the US... she cant touch any of the same things...She has returned to normal after eliminating the wheat from her diet all together.

I don't buy into the GMO or hybridization arguments that are put out there.... but I have been researching wheat in our country.

I was wondering, is it indeed common practice in the USA to use the process of dessication just prior to harvest using glyposate.

Wheat harvest methods in the United States is said to be to treat the crop with glyposate days prior to the combine harvesters working through the fields as dried wheat plants are less taxing on the farm equipment and allows for an earlier, easier and bigger harvest... evens out the greener from the more mature grain for harvest.

Our family is at wits end and we are trying to consider all options.

Much of this issue is overhyped....but I think that there are some people that are sensitive to different things.... One side overstates the case...the other downplays it.
Leaves us looking for good info outside of the media.

I was hoping that one of you can help to outline the process of wheat production here and how the glyphosate may affect the end product??

Any help is much appreciated.

I know... strange question for a sledders forum !

Thanks in advance.

We have grown and harvested wheat on our farm for many years, I'm 4th generation. To my knowledge we have never used glyphosate in our wheat at all. While it is labeled for use as a desiccant, if you read into the details a bit more it really won't get you into the field for harvest but maybe 3 days sooner. Really not worth the price of admission. The only time we really use glyphosate is if we have a grassland that needs controlled, and that would only be in the fall. After 4.5 months through the winter, the glyphosate has been metabolized by the plant or other organic matter and become inert.

Be careful reading reports and articles about "roundup". We had an individual here locally that threw a giant fit over a spray plane flying over her parents house. She just knew it was spraying the wheat with roundup for harvest. Plastered Facebook and other social media and had a few people here in town up in arms. Turns out it was spraying a field 3 miles away from the one she claimed, and it was spraying a glucose mixture (basically sugar syrup, 100% organic) on potatoes to control Beatles. Point being, the hyped up status of this stuff is mostly from people who have little to no clue about it actual usage.

I personally don't raise wheat but know quite a few wheat growers in south Dakota. None of them use a desiccant. Seems like a very odd situation she is experiencing. Wonder if there is something else in the process causing it.

We have never used it either. A neighbor who does quite a bit of wheat hits it with round up if they straight cut it. If you swat it then use a dummy head head to pick it up you don't have to hit it with round up.
They say you get better protein by using round up first to have a total kill and also if you straight cut it, the wheat comes out of the head way easier.

We have never used glyphosate for desiccation on wheat. It is not a current practice in our neck of the woods in the PNW that I’m aware of.

File this under the category "For What Its Worth".

For years my oldest daughter had MIND NUMBING Migraine headaches.
The kind that routinely took her to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Over the course of years we slowly discovered the triggers.
One of them turned out to be Gluten.

So of course she removed pretty much all wheat products from her life and her headaches are very well controlled.

After MUCH research I felt strongly that there was a possible solution to this condition, and that was some very specific WHEAT from the South of Italy that might be the key to her issue.

https://jovialfoods.com/einkorn/
Sprouted Einkorn Flour

What made the difference for my daughter was the specific type of Gluten this wheat contained. It is NOT Gluten free!!

So my thought was that while this may be RARE and UNCOMMON here in the USA, perhaps it is much MORE common where your niece was??

1500 acres of wheat grown annually personally.
Never used or heard of or seen nieghbors using roundup as a dessicant.

So she’s not having the same issues with Organic products?

Not having a reaction to most organic wheat.

And the pasta etc that comes from family in Italy care packages... no reaction either.... and thats not organic... though they control the sprays more than here.

Selenium is a trace mineral. It’s presence in the wheat is directly related to the amount in the soil and or water where it’s grown.

It’s also critical for vital organ function. My sister takes selenium supplements for her thyroid to function properly.

Extremely high dosage is required to encounter selenium toxicity.
Not much of a factor unless bread is her only food.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right... You say "Key to her issue"

Do you mean the Einkorn was causing or solving her problem

mountainhorse Could it be the packaging that is causing this and not the wheat itself. Not sure how the hell you would test it. Taking into account the answers that have been given here (very small sample to the amount that is grown yearly in this country i and sure) but could it be something either in the processing or packaging in the US that is causing a reaction if she can still get wheat from italy and have no reaction. Just throwing it out there since the packaging would certainly be different then how they do it in Europe i am sure.

Great conversation here guys. I’m very interested in this subject.

Who do the wheat farmers that have replied so far supply their wheat to?

I have a couple Friends that farm grains but they don’t Sell to anyone that commercially processes it.

I’m thinking this is the factor here MH.

Something HUGE commercial style wheat farms do, COULD Be the reason!

I see much more reasonable and responsible, practices in “smaller” farming operations.

I too am not yet sold on the whole “non gmo” “organic” stuff that’s so popular right now.
I really struggle to think that a BUNCH of organic property was just so well
Established as soon as the “organic fad” came along. That they could, in a couple years, supply a HUGE market with their “organic” products..... I don’t believe it.

I don’t like the use of glyphosate, does bad things in the human body.

Oscar who posted above can chime back in but those guys aren’t small farmers and I do believe they’re responsible. I think they’re north of 12k acres!!!
