AR caliber ?

To the OP. If you dont know already, get the 5.56 nato. The reason for that is you can shot ether 5.56 or .223 in the same set up. If you go for only the .223 then you can not shoot the 5.56 in that set up. The 5.56 is basicly the same round only sized a fraction larger.

My DPMS shoots 5.6 and .223. I almost bought a .260 or a 6.5 Grendel. But my next will be an upper from bohica arms either their .50 BMG or .338 Lapua Mag.

.338 Lapua man. Dont waste your time on the .50

Before probably any of you were even born I spent a tour in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. We roamed the Central Highlands of 11 Corps carrying the .223 M-16. I can tell you without going into detail it has no problem whatsoever killing anything we met up with. Tigers, wild boars, big azz snakes, and of course it killed very well the thing we were sent there to kill. No problems. Those of you that think a .22 is not deadly have no experience.

If it is chambered in 5.56, you can shoot a .223 through the same action without having to do anything to it? and no noticeable drawbacks as far as accuracy or reliable feeding of ammo, jamming, etc.?

thanks for the red rep whoever it was.. :beer;
but anyways... i never said that the .22 is not deadly.. i was the one that said i would chamber the .223 round
i simply told a story about someone arguing that the .22 was the deadliest. im just saying i feel my chances are better getting hit by a .22 than a bigger caliber bullet with more force behind it. a .223 has more energy behind it than a .22LR .... same caliber but there is a HUGE difference

All very good points...my Dad ...x Marine, very avid hunter, told me time and time again " bullet placement not caliber is more important" I would think if your a good marksman you could defend your self , your loved ones with just about any round. Dino

We are forgetting about some of the new ones, including the 6.5 creedmore, 20 Tactical, 450 bushmaster, 458 SOCOM, and 50 Beowolf. I'm kinda thinking that one of the bigger rounds loaded into a subsonic package would have fairly good penetrating capabilities, enough to penetrate the intruder, but not enough to pentrate too many walls. Not to mention, a 300 grn bullet at even 900 fps would be devestating!

5.56/.223 For the AR. For home defense X2 for the shotgun. If you miss the .223 will go a long ways and hit ??? For any house gun I would recomend the fragmenting ammo. I read it will only go through one layer of sheet rock, but not two. Makes a big mess out of whatever it hits.

Ive shot a lot of rock chucks and coyotes and it doesn't do as much as ya would think. I mean don't get me wrong it does a lot.

I agree with you when it comes to these, because there isnt enough there for the bullet to open up and do its job like it would on a home invader or whitetail at 1500m. Just punches a 1/2" hole through it. I prefer a 22 magnum with hollow points for the chucks and yotes. More violent. I dont mind taking a $5 box of full metak jacket .223 and touching each end flat for .010 and zapping the odd bear or yote. I know this method affects accuracy but it works. Imagine an invader/crackhead in the doorway. Its an ar for cripes sake, the range is what 10-12 ft and you have 20 shot clip............
