Apex turbo head shims ???

So I have a turbo from Colorado 8000 feet plus and now I am at 500 to 8000 feet in any one ride. I want to put a head shim into it but the shop is saying it will be 8 hours. When I bought it Outlaw said 4 hours max to do it. What is the deal? How long and really what should be involved?

its not that hard, but if the shop isnt used to doing it, it takes longer, as far as 8 hours... thats pretty slow, is it a front mount turbo? if so that definately adds to the complexity of stuff needed to be taken off.

you have to loosen the delta box, remove airbox, charge system, throttle boddies, header, possibly steering parts, not sure on those, but theres just a lot of odds and ends that takes a while, and if its a front mount you have to get the turbo and its lines off as well which is just a lot of work, 4 hrs is a little tight, but 8 is way long.

Head Shim Apex Turbo

Yeap it is a Boon Docker Front Mount Turbo.
He is telling me the Intake has to be milled as well when doing the shim?
Why?
He has done a few Nitros. He is supposed to be the best in town but with the comp that aint sayign much. @ strokes I get this is my first four. I have riddent the sled though so that helps my trust in it and it weighs in at 530lbs as it sits.

just trying to make it a bit more reliable safe with decent boost at low and varied elevations. Still 50% race gas though.

yeah, the only thing you have to not forget when donig it is to adjust the cam timing as it throw is off.. i learned all about that the hard way when I did my shim, and now its coming back apart to get it... blehhh

Without a turbo my cousin and I did one in 4 hours start to finish and that was attaching the new header and turbo for the impulse kit. But the main tear down doesnt take that long.

Longest part was doing the cams once it we had the head back on. Rest is all bolt and go.

With the kit on already remove and reinstall doing timing and have it running again ---- is a days work 8 hours to do it all right run up the sled bleed coolant etc. I would not quote less although if you have done a bunch of them you may get it down to 6 or 7 hours.

If you get a good job with no prob's down the road 8hrs is worth it:rolleyes:

I agree if it is done right it is worth it it just does not sit well with me that he has not done one and I am putting $$$$$$$$$ in his hands. IS there better shims out there or setups?

shims

dont know what is better but we have been debateing the differences in shims, of the two I have dealt with mcx uses a 59 thou shim and one head gasket split. =79 thou and about 9.5 to 1 comp. boondockers uses a 63 thou shim and two head gaskets and comp ratio of 8.7 to 1. higher compresion should equal better response but need better fuel.

am curious of opinions

on another note I would be comfortable with a good mechanic who knows his way around yami engines. As long as he seems concerned about getting it right. it always seems the guy who is very comfortable with it doesnt look at the book anymore and forgets something.
