Apex met a rock

Went over a pointy rock. Think it poked a hole in the bottom of the crankcase. Any idea of what it's going to take to get fixed and what's involved.

If the engine was shutoff right away & didnt starve of oil, will have to remove motor to replace what people would call an oil pan. If it did starve of oil, likely better to find anothe engine.

Got lucky...sort of.

Spotted it right away so should be no engine damage. Did find out that towing one of those for about 15 miles is not easy It was all trail, but uphill

The bottom half of the engine is mated to the top. In other words you cannot just replace it with another unless you replace both. Hopefully you broke one of the other replaceable covers. If nothing else you can have it welded, but I would strongly suggest you get it welded while both case halves are torqued together to prevent warping of sealing surfaces.

Wait a minute, the bulkhead should keep any rocks out....unless the bulkhead is broken. You should look under the sled and see.

He could have pierced the inspection cover and got to the 'oil pan' with all 1.5 qts in it. Unless he had a skid plate.

I have seen this exact situation on Turbo apex he nailed a pointy rock and it broke through the bulkhead and smashed the oil pan.

To get it off the mountain we took a cordless recip saw and cut the bulk head and changed out the oil pan poured the oil in and rode it out.

It is a huge fix basically tear the whole sled down and replace the bulkhead and put everything back on. Cost buddy about $5000 to fix.

No pics yet

I haven't had a chance to doing anything yet. There is just a small hole in the inspection plate to the left of where the oil drain plug is. Gonna try to get insurance to foot the bill for me as it's sounding expensive to fix. Just the bottom half the crankcase is about 1700 bucks.

leak

pull the inspection plate if it is just the pan you can remove the alluminum plate that the inspection panel is in (bottom of bulkhead) put a new oil pan/ lower cover and reinstal the bulkhead section. this will be the fastest way to fix it if it is just the lower cover. you should be able to roll it up and check in 5 minutes.. julio

i would think you just got the oil pan it would take some extreme bad luck to get the bottom of the crank case the way the motor sits.

You cannot buy just the bottom half of the crankcase. Top and bottom are a matched set and sold together. In any case, what you will probably need is the bottom cover, which is called the strainer cover. Yamaha Sports Plaza wants $71.58 for it. It is listed in the Yamaha parts diagrams under the "oil cleaner" page.

Got luckier

Thanks for all the information. It got the inspection plate, another half inch to the left and it would have been a whole nuther problem. I didn't even know there was a plate, I thought it was just the bottom of the crankcase.
