Apex handling/weight loss

I'm with Thistledoo. My Gen II's handle just like my Gen I's did on the hard pack. I was one of the first to get the Gen II's and I'd never go back. I love them so much I bought my bro Derek (Colorado Yamaha), a set for Christmas last year. He loves them too. Gotta try them for yourself.

Any Simmons will stop the biting/darting you encounter on hard pack with the stock ski's.

BTW..your sleds sounds pretty sweet. What ever you decide to go with for ski's, a skid, and some Fox Floats or Ohlins will make it a new ride.

Man I can't wait to get back the US and decent temps. This 120-140 temps are killin me. Come on snow...

Well got the gen 2's comming..wifes been going to therapy and said she is not going to bark at me for spending money....whooohoooo what else is going to make this baby handle like a feather....before she changes her mind.... lol.....possible bought a timber skid to.....gotta try something instead of sitting on the fence.....Is the front timber suspension worth it or would upgrading the shocks be better...

I have pretty much the same setup as you with the stock skid and simmons skis. I found that pulling some of the preload out of the ski shocks makes it handle a bunch better. It bottoms a bit more but it is way more nimble and a much nicer ride. I run the limiter strap pulled in two holes for regular riding and pull it in 4 holes if I want to keep the ski a little closer to the ground. I will be getting rid of the simmons ski and going with powder pro's or something with a more of an arc on the keel.

yes I unloaded the front shocks a bunch on one of our last rides of the year....like you say more nimble but bottomed out when you hit hard....

Guys that are running floats like them??

For guys running the barkbuster front end on the apex......does it work well? would it be better to leave the a arms and install some decent shocks?

If you must go with one or the other. Go with good shocks. ..

I have Fox Floats, but they are not the best handling. Ohlins would be much better, but I prefer to fight the light weight issue. I also have the Barkbuster. It doesn't change the handling, at least not noticable to me, but it allows for a tighter turn radius.

Hard choice, but with both I lost over 15 pounds, and my sled still handles nice.

Just keep the Bark busters shimmed tight or they will wallow out everything...

If I had to do it again I would have gone with the wider stance on the Barkbusters. If you do that you will need 16.5 CTC shocks.

Is the center distance of the fox float on the barkbuster front end the same as the stock shocks? Whats the big disadvantage with the floats on the apex? What is a shock thats working well that doesn't brake the bank?

What about the stock shocks with some triple rate spring set ups?? Is the stock shock just garbage?? The one thing I immedietly notices after I bought the my apex is the stock from end sucks. I had to really loosen the front springs up to get a good ride, but suffered on the big bumps, it bottumed hard. I have looked at the ohlins, but holy crap man they are spendy and to put tripples on those, thats 2k for the front shocks. But I sure loved my edge with the tripple spring set up.

Well im not sure if they will work, but a good alternate to Ohlins are the yamaha GYTR shocks that come on the Apex GT with remote resevoirs to adjust dampening and what not. About $200 or so a shock, I guess they are really worth the money.

The problem I have found with floats is that they dont rebound as well as a spring shock, they just give out. I found a good setup spring shock to ride just as good if not bette than a float once they are setup. If you setup your spring shocks to fit your riding style then you wouldnt need to mess with them once your out riding, where as with floats it seems people are always playing with them to get there "ride", I know I always packed my float pump, now that I look back on it, seems sorta rediculous, just go out and ride. Doesnt make much sense to me but the weight savings anymore

Im sure the Fox Float Evols would be a different story, but it seems that there are just toooo many variables in shocks, I mean really........elevation, barometric pressure, fluids, different springs, you cant tell me all shocks are exactly the same when they leave the factory.

I guess im just rambling on now, but this year im gonna try the GYTR front shocks on my sled and have the Zbroz make me a set in the rear for my weight and riding style

Anyone have any pictures of the GYTR shocks? I am really sitting on the fence with what to do on the front end....I was going to get the Barkbuster...not really convinced on the floats for the front, where we ride there is alot of tree running and with those gen2 skis on kind of thinking of keeping the front a arms on for strength...saving 6.5 lbs doesn't really seem worth it...Can the GYTR's be revalved? What's the part number? The center's are the samw as the stock apex mnt shocks?

If you use the GYTR's with the narrow barkbuster front end you will have drop out issues. The GYTR's are a 16.5 CTC shock. I had to have mine spaced down to 15 3/4 inch to keep the ball joints from binding on full drop out. I would go with the wide stance barkbuster and leave the GYTR's at 16.5 inches. If you stay with the stock A-arms and use the GYTR's you will only need to space up the tie rods by about 3/4 inch to keep them from hitting the bulk head. sway bar also will still work fine.

I have dual rate springs and a Hi/low speed valve set up for a stiff ride by Hy-gear. I love them. They nailed the set up on the first round. Only took a couple of runs to get them dialed.

The GYTR's are fully rebuildable and have low speed comnpression adj and rebound adjustment stock.

Look around on the forums guys were unloading them cheap and they are a great base platform to modify.

Hope that helps.... My opinion on floats is on here somewhere and it is not a high mark post!! Junk on an Apex with all of the weight they carry up front you just can't make them work...

I know this has been discussed before, but I haven't found any good info.....will ohlins clicker piggybacks off a 08 Apex GT fit on the apex MNT? Are they good shocks compared to Ohlins from the factory.....I have a chance to buy a set and wondering what mods have to be done for the longer shock.......Are they 16.5 ctc? so all that need to be done is shim the tie rod end?
