Apex handling/weight loss

What are the best mods that you have done to improve the handling and weight loss on the apex....I like the power of the turbo apex, but where we ride its a lot of tree running and exploring...I have now problem keeping up with the rest of the 2 smokes in our group, but the I am getting tired of being completely worn out at the end of the day...Almost thinking of going back to a lite weight 2 stroke.....looking for honest opinions....

My current setup
apex mcx rear mount
stock suspension front and rear
mm seat and hood
crracing steering

You can drop 20-25 pounds with a tunnel swap, probally at least another 15 with a rear suspension, and 10 or so with some lightweight a-arms. Nothing is cheap though:(

I'm tellin ya....first thing to do is Gen 2 simmons.....the were designed for the apex and I'm tellin ya they flat out work on the apex.

PM Yamamauler and ask what he's done to his...

I rode it in heavy snow conditions and carving it around was as effortless as my Dragon. That thing is butta...... IMO

CoyoteGirl......it's not so much the carving around that's the easy part...it's trying to follow someone's tracks in the deep snow(trail in), or on the harder snow conditions when you can't seem to find a balance point, and end up fighting it all day....Hey Thistle here is a question for you.....The difference between your apex and nytro before boost...Is it night and day on handling?...is it worth the switch? or could the apex be transformed with different suspension?...Changing the tunnel to save 20 lbs doesn't seem like its worth the cash.....I have had a blast with this apex, the power is unbelievable......

I would have boosted my apex but the MCX rear mt had to much lag for me....didnt want to do a front mt so I waited. The nytro with MCX has virtually no lag and I'm glad I waited:D

You have got to get rid of the rear skid. They are unreal heavy and only do one thing decent at a time. If they are set up for climbing, then they won't transfer enough to work in the trees. I put a Doo skid in my Nytro with Ti springs and it works great. The skid weighs less than 50 lbs and handles boost without a problem. The skid has to be a 159 from 05-07 Summit. There are other options for skids, but this seems to be the best value for how strong it is.

Like others have said... you have to do the rear skid. I did the timbersled skid in mine, rear brackets, boss seat, exhaust, removed all the rear tunnel plastic, front float shocks, Simmons skis and Hartman clutching. I really like the sled now and it was a blast to ride. I'm doing a tunnel this year and hopefully a turbo... have to be able to keep up with my wife and her t-nytro:face-icon-small-win.

Most fun I've had in years on a sled and the snow was deep. I rode a stock one for about 5 minutes and it didn't float the same at all in the powder, mine feels very agile.

yah I have some 3/4" spacers in the transfer rods, heavier springs and a gas shock.....I was thinking of a regular m-10 but its just as heavy as what I got, the cr-10 is extreme, I was leaning towards the timber skid due to weight reduction and sounds like it is working ok, I heard Baker was playing around with skidoo skids and having good luck......I am sure the front stock shocks are shat.......I felt that the simmons I have on know make it steer harder to the stock ski's.......

I would ride a sled with the Timberland before buying it. Alot of people seem to think it works good, but I have heard also heard some negatives. Any time you are relying totally on air for suspension it is very finicky to set up properly. There may be some strength issues as well. I run a Racers Edge m-10. It is 47 lbs and pretty tough. I am not sure if you've heard, but these Apexes are kinda heavy, so strong is good.

quick weight loss for good value is a boss seat and a timbersled skid. this only takes weight off the rear of the sled though. the problem is on the front end. no matter how you slice it, the apex engine weighs twice what an 800 twin weighs. for anyone who thinks this is inaccurate, place a scale under the front ski of an 800, and then an apex. turbo or not, you will notice the weight most in tight trees and and off camber stuff. when i ride our demo tapex with 2 strokes, i try to ride smarter and use less effort. training more and wheelying (sp?) by the tree riders on the hill also seems to help........

i know how you can loose 150 pounds its called going down to your local skidoo dealer....:D

I didnt' think somebody could shi! 150 pds onto a doo PUD. It's a thought though.

Shawn, last year between my apex's(when I sold the 06 and built the 07) I rode a 2 smoker around for a couple of weeks and I couldnt' believe how tired I was at the end of the day on them. basically there wasn't any power to do what you wanted when your only have 150 h.p. I rode an 06 rev and 05 900 rmk and a 2003 800 doo as well. so it's not a biased opinion against 1 two smoker. on the other hand you have an apex that has soo much power, and I think that's where you get tired from. light weighting the apex will help, but with all that power I still think your going to be tired as he!! at the end of the day from holding on.

the nytro I have is basically a sled that is right in the middle. only running 12 pds boost so far, it rides like any of the rider forward sleds out there with the bonus of boost. amazing booning sled, you know what the power is like. just gotta sell the apex and get one of these. You'll regret getting rid of boost everytime you go out riding. give me a call tomorrow. I'll be out in taber on some calls, if your around let me know.

It don't matter what you do....Its still going to be heavy. Mine has every light weight part minus the tunnel, & Ti bolts. 100% wet ready to ride she comes in at 652 pounds. That's with a tow strap for the Doo's and a few chioce tools.....don't forget BOOOOOST!

1st Gen II's are the only way to go.

2nd, In order as you can afford it; Lose the rear rack and add an LED tail light; Craiggerbuilt gas can & rack system; MM High Rise Seat & under tunnel exhaust; Timbersled front end; Fox Floats in front; skid w/Timbersled drop brackets; Fox Float rear susp; Camo Extreme 174'' x 16'' x 2.5'' (doesn't save weight, but its mean and floats); TJ's vent kit; TJ's Side Pannel kit; and a MM hood.

The Gen II's, the skid and the Cammo Ext make your Apex a new machine.

Don't forget Boost.....Its makes the world go around...Even if you get a SC. better than no Boooooooooost.

PS. If looks mean more to you than weight lose. Get the seat, exhaust, MM Hood, and the TJ's kits.

The setup I have now is as follows
mcx rear mount
Mnt Mod seat/hood
Cr racing steering post, bars, gauge relocation bracket
LC pistons running 17psi of boost
Front and rear stock suspension...rear has the stiffer springs, gas shock, and 3/4" blocks on the transfer rods...front shock is set up full, rear spring setup as stiff as they go...front suspension shocks setup about 2/3 on the stiffer side.....Steering seem realy hard was thinking the simmons with 2 runners make it that way on hard pack...new steering bushings every year........

The hard pack issues are gonna be tough no matter how you look at it. But when its deep and your scouting thru the tight trees the gen 2's work great at keeping your front end up and from diving off camber when trying to turn. They are no different on hard pack the gen 1's. They float great and I saw it over and over. Find a used set and bolt em on....if your gonna keep the apex its a must:)
