Anyone run SLP Exhaust set with stock clutching

I ran a search and really couldent find anything relating to stock

I am going to add a y-pipe, pipe and can to my M8. Dealer suggested the #71 SLP MTX weights. I'm a little nearvous having them reshim and go down that whole road.

Getting to the question, just running the stock 68's worked really well last year. Never lost a belt, everything ran really well.

Any issues just leaving the clutching alone !

I know some of these threads get monotonous , do I need this, that, how many horse this .............................

I just want to be prepared, if its a issue, I would rather deal with it now !

Thanks

I ran it a couple hundred miles last year with stock clutching, i dropped a couple grams at the end of the season and was getting higher rpms than i like. (8300ish max) so i went back to stock weights for my elevation.

I ran stock weights last season with my SLP setup. I was running from 5-7,000 feet mostly and using 73 gram weights. I was pulling RPMs right on the money (8,200?) climbing.

I'm not sure what your elevation is but, I would think that for anything above 9,000 feet that 71 grams sounds reasonable.

Check this out, it has all the clutching specs for your SLP single pipe setup.

Or you could get a set of Cutler's adjustables so you can change weight in the field to get it juuuuust right.

if your getting the right rpm and no bogs and your belt lasts it will work just fine. The only thing is the mtx might work a little better, just depends on how picky you are.
So far on my 09 m1000 the mtx weights worked the best,

Ok, perfect

I just ordered the SLP kit, I will ride it first before I do anything drastic.

I think rock rollers and a shift assist would be a welcome addition and not all that much $

Thanks for all the input

Little follow up..............

Just to follow up on the first post,

Last year I ran my M8 stock with a SLP can with 68 gram weights. It pulled 8000 ish in almost any condition. I ride 10k-13.5K

Just got out for a first ride since adding the full SLP kit (Pipe Y and can), rock rollers and a shift assist. On the trail I could get 7500 maybe 7600. This was all at 12k ish.

It pulls hard from 4000-7500 and seems to upshift and backshift better. I played on small hill and got the same results. I am very impressed with how the pipe added low end and mid.

Now, I called SLP they are sending out a set of 71 gram MTX weights. At first impressions I thought I need to loose weight to pick up the RPM. SLP explaiend that the 800 twins need to be loaded more the the 68's are doing. This results in a loss of combution temps and less rpm.

I am kind of leaning towards taking out the shift assist. Seemed lith the secondary was overshifting.

Anyways, whats your thoughts ? Am I headed down the right road ?

My opinion is to install the weights you ordered from SLP and then test. I would not take out the shift assist. Change one component at a time or your tuning job can get quite complicated. If you ran last season with your current primary spring you should consider replacing it as clutch springs are a maintenance item. Good sleddin!

I ran SLP pipe last year, on my o9 M8. I ended up 68 mtx's, slp recommended and sent the 71's. My sled would not meet target rpm's with 71. I ride 10,000 and up. It would on packed trail, but not on the pow. Just rode this sunday and with the 68's pulled 7900 to 8100 no matter what. I've got some 71's if you want to try. SLP wont take back after installed.

Crap..........

I just ordered the 71's

Your running the 162" right ?

i have the slp kit and was wondering what is the target rpm, i am running around 7900-8100, all clutching is stock,
seemed to run great all last year, it did sometimes feel like it was trying to pull hills in 5th gear when it should have down shifted a bit though.

also the rock rollers- are they a good purchase??

thanks guys

Ya, I gotta 162, I also put a shift assist on and I run the bdx air box. I argued with SLP, I had strong feeling the 71 would not work. Because friends 07 M8 has same mods and he is swinging 65 cutlers.

Try to tune using the arctic cat weights first, I dont know your elevation but you should be able to tune with cat weights. I installed the MTX 71's a couple of weeks ago, needed to install new belt, found out that I needed to shim spider for new belt. My decision was to stick with cat weights, because once you shim for MTX you cant try cat weights because of difference shive clearance. I also have a set of 71 MTX's now in my "extra parts box" .
68 cat weights at high elevation should be a good weight. hope this helps.

Nothing is cooler then donating money to SLP................

I have a feeling the 68's is what I really needed:mad:

My brother and I talked to SLP in depth at haydays about what clutching to run. They said straight up that the mtx weights are profiled a little differently than the stock AC weights and that their recommended MTX 71g weights = Cat 68g stock weights. Take that for what it's worth.
