Anyone put a clutch in a Chevy?

Anyone put a clutch in a Chevy truck? Mine is a 1993, 350 motor and 4X4....anyone ever put one in a similar truck, how hard is it? I hear it isn't too bad. I wish I could just go and buy a new truck! LOL

It's an 8 beer job with tranny jack, 12 pack without. Worst part is getting the splines to mesh going back in.

If you dont have a tranny jack and/or a lift....I'd consider pulling the engine to get to the clutch. Then you don't have to fight lift the tranny/t-case in place and trying to deal with it under the truck.

Just my .02. Good luck!:beer;

a floor jack can be made to work, just a little scary, on the older ones it aint bad, just leave it in gear, so when you go to put it back in, then you can spin the output shaft to help get the splines to go together.

Done a couple on a 1990 Chevy 1500 ext cab with a 350. Make sure you support the motor with a jack stand and board before you pull the tranny or the engine will fall against the firewall and break the dist. cap. I would also recommend getting the flywheel turned. The guys at napa can turn it for us here for like $25 might want to check around to see who can do it. Also I would make sure you have the plastic clutch alignment tool, usually comes with the clutch but sometimes they don't. Worst part about doing it on the ground is trying to get the splines lined up when reinstalling it with it on a jack. Me and a buddy managed to put one in in a couple of hours with just a floor jack. Make sure you have some long azz extensions so you can get the top tranny bolts. With the cross member out you should be able to leave the t-case on.

I did my old 90 chevy 350/5spd in my shop. I had to get help to pull the transmission, and it took 3 of us to put it back in. The transfer case takes two guys, it's just awkward.

Did mine on the lift, but it's really not too hard. X2 on the long extensions, I used like 2-3 feet worth to get it done.

I'm spoiled with having a lift, but a tranny jack is worth it's weight in gold. Definitely need lots of extensions, I really like having "wobble" extensions. I just put a tranny in a buddies YJ last month.

Thanks for all the advice! Ya I just have a floor jack, but I am sure I can get my hands on a tranny jack. A local shop quoted me $460 to put it in (includes cost of clutch) and the clutch kit (from auto part store), including the plastic tool to line up the splines is $125. I am a cheap azz and don't want to pay the extra 335.

Anyone want to come and help me! I will supply the food and beer! ;)

If I was closer, I'd give you a hand. It's really not that bad at all. Just takes some time moving things around.

BTW, the syncromesh for that tranny is like 12 bux a quart!

Thanks for the thought brotha!

I work on Big trucks for a living. If you live by a rental place you should be able to rent a tranny jack and you don't have to fight the floor jack or worry about the tranny falling on you and you don't have to split the trans and T-case. The hardest part of this Jod is getting the shifter in and out and its fairly simple. Make sure you leave the tranny and case in a high gear because this usually is a 1-1 ratio and it will turn the input shaft to line up the splines easier.

The jacks aren't expensive to rent and it makes lift a lot easier in the long run and usually if you rent stuff on Sat morning you don't have to return it until Monday morning and only get charged for 1 day.

Good Luck

It's not bad. Did one in my '90 Z71 back in college. 2 floor jacks, use 1 under the t-case, couple ratchet straps, helps to have 2 people to put it back together.
Me and a buddy did it in a day, 8hrs maybe, incl beer breaks.
Make sure you go ahead and replace the slave cyl while you're down there, and have the flywheel turned.
2nd on supporting the engine before dropping the trans.
I'd never consider pulling the engine in lieu of the trans.
