Anyone going through Clutch Belts??

The cat 048 belt is not good on an axys.
The key for me has been gearing down to 2.4 with a TKI belt drive and going to softer clutch springs. Have gone through 10 belts in 1800 miles but since i've done gearing and clutching it's a lot better.

So really, it's like 400 miles for one belt.

Not really cause there is life in the belts- just what we do.
Never pulled a cord.
I will buy a new one next season and rotate till performance dies with the last years belts.

I did run the 115 belt and it slips quite a bit when hot..FWIW

"If you just ride hard without ever taking a break and let things cool, that isn't a belt or machine flaw, that is operator error and you have to fix that yourself..."

I do think this is my issue. When you get 1 day a week to let it all out its tough to stop all damn day and let things cool. Especially after blowing $10+ grand on a machine that was supposedly designed for what I'm doing. Maybe the industry will eventually address this issue after they are done chasing down the lightest sled possible.

Anyone know if the Doo's are as prone to this as the Pros?

You might want to invest in a Blow Hole vent/fan (MTNTK brand?). Those things suck a lot of hot air out of the clutch area.

Mike, you have an alignment issue possibly motor mounts or a serious clutch calibration malfunction.

Didn't this sled get tore up at Baker a few years ago? How many miles? Have the motor mounts ever been changed? Have the motor strap bolts been checked? (loosened up or broken?)

That sled needs to be torn into. I'd go bankrupt buying belts that often.

I ride with a guy who rides pretty relentless all day, have seen him go through a tank in a few hours on Doo's and Poo's...he has had both in recent years. Never a belt problem.
As Dave says, there is something with either alignment (perhaps when loaded and not a static alignment issue??), calibration (clutching and/or gearing FOR THE WAY YOU RIDE), or a contamination issue...oil or water getting on the clutches will junk a belt quickly.
Are your foot-wells blocked off? Kicking snow into the clutch area when kicking boards to clear snow.
Any cracks in the side panel on that side?
Vents that let in more than air?
Signs of oil from oil line, oil tank, exhaust valves getting blown back onto the clutch?
When everything is "correct", you can hammer on that sled all day and you shouldn't be losing belts.
Also check crank deflection. Not a big problem on the Poo's, but if it is drastically out of spec for some reason it will cause the primary to "wobble" and make a lot of belt heat.
Another thing to check...let the clutches cool for a bit, then make 1 pull on a hill. Stop and check clutch temps...is one noticeably hotter than the other? If so, calibration could perhaps be improved.

Thanks for the replies, looks like Ill have to start really looking closely at my setup and alignments.

IMO if you unload and hit the trail at 80 mph without letting the belt warm up before hogging on it you will be buying belts. Pro with 3-4000 miles may have motor straps that have come loose, or woren primary clutch roller and weights. Something is wrong if you can't get 800+ miles out of a belt. Have a SKS with 2500 miles and just started to pull a cord.

Mike, i agree u have something wrong if u blow a belt with one tank of fuel but i also agree if u ride like u do non-stop, belts will not make it 500 miles.
Most of my 800's(all brands) would get 300-500 on a belt. If i ride with people that like to take breaks, i think i can get 1,000 miles on a belt, i know my mom can get well over 1,000 miles on a belt.

It's all in how you ride it. If your pinned all day the belt won't last! I'm on #3 in 800 miles. The ones I wrecked were my fault, climb after climb with no cool down in between. If you are just boondocking around belt will last all year with no breaks. These machines are maybe a little harder on belts than the pro but not much
