Anyone Ever Had This Problem?

My 03 Mountain Cat 800 is making like a ratcheting noise when i take off, but then it stops when i get into mid range. It sounds kinda like its coming from the clutches but aint quite sure. If anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it!

Either track is loose and ratcheting, Or chain is jumping teeth. I would look at both, Track first. About 1.5" of sag when lifted or 2" max with a 10# weight hanging off. Another possibility is the infamous clutch side drive axle bearing could be shot, Pull speedo cover and pull grease seal out, And re-pack if it looks good! Hope this helps?

If it has been jumping, I don't think it would do it any good! But I would bet it is the track. It all depends on how many miles and what kind of maintenance you do ea. season? I would check it all! That way at least you have a piece of mind!

Install a new drive belt. Have rode with a cat that had this exact problem. Drove us nuts for about an hour until we changed the belt. We stopped on the trail and tightened the track until it was fiddle string tight but the noise wouldn't quit. When we installed the new belt the noise went away. I learned something that day >>>>.

I will bet money it is the speedo bearing. if you haven't replaced it in the last couple of years buy one before you even tear it apart. I grease the heck out of mine and still replace it every other year.

well you gotta drop your rear susp. track and take your chaincase apart. not to bad if your mechanically inclined

Well kidrman you where right the speedo bearing is had. Do i need to take the whole track out to replace it or just drop the front? Anyone have any secrets on this befor i go tear into it?

The rear suspension needs to come out and the chaincase has to be taken apart so you can get the driveshaft out.

If you have somewhere you can hang the back of the sled it is 1000000 times easier. After that its 4 bolts that hold the rear suspension in. Like 6 bolts on the chaincase cover. And 3 nuts that hold the bearings in each side. Its a piece of cake.
