Anyone drive from Missoula to Boise?

Going through Hamilton and down that way? Whats it like for travel? Whats it like mid-March??

But what kind of road is it, 2 lane I assume. Can you do 60 reasonably? Trying to figure the best way to get from say Thompson Falls, to Boise area.

Opus,
I grew up in this area. If you are looking at the shortest distance, stay on 93 to Challis and then take 75 to Stanley, and 21 on into Boise. However, if you are looking at the shortest time. Stay away. It is all pretty much 2-lane river road.

Lost Trail Pass will be 40 mph average, Salmon to Challis will be 45 to 50 mph average, Clayton to all the way to Boise will be 40 to 45 MPH average. If you are going to make this drive, plan on spending some time and enjoying the scenery, but don't plan on making up any travel time (especially if you are hauling a trailer). Weather SHOULD be OK, but up by Stanley you could end up with bad roads and possibly even a closure on Banner Summit, depending upon the weather.

Take drphil's advice if you are looking at the quickest route.

We're doing a couple concerts down there. We want to get there and back, but dont want to take the 'scenic' route. We do this every weekend or so, we see enough scenery. This one is going to be a little time pressed. We may have dates along the way, so that will depend on which way we go too.

Suburban and a little trailer.

Thanks for the input....as much as I HATE going through Spokane. :)

Yeah, it will take me about 4 1/2 hourst to get to Missoula from Clayton and then it is about another 3 1/2 hours to Boise from there. So you are looking at about 8 hours total. How about going down Highway 12 from Lolo? More river road, but it is much shorter.

Hwy 12 is about 8 hrs also. A lot of 2 lane with lots of curves for miles along the rivers. Sometimes a lot of truck traffic also.

Got back tonight. Went down 95 from Sandpoint. Wow, Hell's Canyon area!! Council are was nice too. Beautiful drive. Looking over Lewiston was cool too.

Fruitland, Payette and south was springtime. Great looking soil compared to here.

We had to come back 95 to 12 to 12. That was a LONG drive. Of course we had most of the drive in snow. Interesting area, Kooskia, etc. Son called it "hillbilly hell". :/

Anyways, thats my report.........

I have a LOT of time on the highway between Missoula through that Highway 93 area. I've gone through Leadore and also done Challis to Mackey or Stanley. FASTEST way to Boise from Missoula is hwy 93 all the way to the Carey, Idaho (4.5 hours at the most) and then take that cut off straight west to Boise (2.5 hours). 7 hours.

I did Twin Falls from Missoula in 5.25 hours once. BUT I took a cut-off north of Mackey Idaho and went over Trail Creek to Sun Valley and then down to Twin.

I have made over 80 passes through Salmon Idaho. I DO know the quickest way through that area. Leadore is DANG fast too...but the Craters of the Moon sucks.

We actually had to be in Parma, Roswell area. Boise would have been a bit out of the way. I was just generalizing. Lot of snow up on Lookout yesterday though. Looked nice for the few riders that we saw up there.

im ten miles from parma and i can make it to salmon in 4 but thats a mega cab with no trailer week days and early mornings make this drive a lot faster in the summer cuz travel tralers and hippie campers can really slow you down
you can be to parma from salmon in like 5 to 5and 1/2 hrs if yu dont drive like a grandma so from missoula to there would me 8 to 9 if you come that way turn at horsehoe bend go to emmett then towards new plymouth to fruitland
to parma and roswell

Ha, hillbilly hell. Get 30 miles off of the freeways and all of the small little towns here are pretty much the exact same way (outside of Sun Valley, that is). I grew up in "hillbilly hell" and it is not that bad. I would rather call it "God's Country" :D

If you like the outdoors, this part of Idaho is where you want to be. Wish I could find a job that pays what my current one does and live up there. Of course, I grew up where you did not have to trail you sleds to hit the hills or trailer your horses to go hunting. You could go right from the house. Talk about being spoiled.:beer;

The country was great, the characters we saw were rather interesting, is the point. ;) Reminds me a lot of here, except we have fewer people.

Yeah, I spend most of my time in the Salmon River drainage and don't get to see my Northern Idaho brothers too often. Of course, we have our hillbillies here to, but I guess that I am used to them.
