anybody wear danner boots when they ride?

I have a pair of Danner Ft Lewis and a pair of Acadias. The Ft Lewis boots are 17 years old and on their 4th set of soles, the Acadias are 11 years old and about to get their 3rd soles. The greatest thing about a high quality boot like a Danner is they have a sewn welt and can be resoled.

IMO they're not that good of a riding boot. To each his own but they lack the warmth and ankle support I prefer in a riding boot. Wear what works.

4th pair of soles? so what does it cost to get new ones put on?

Been wearing danners for 10 yrs, the same pair. They are the black military issued ones with steel toe. Work really good. Wish they'd wearout so i could get some new ones, but they won't darnit....have fun

catmechanic,

Check out your local shoe repair shop. I've been going the same guy since I got the Ft Lewis boots. The first resole cost me $50 in '94. The 4th cost $70 in '07.

A new pair of Ft Lewis' runs about $250. For me it's totally worth getting a great pair of comfy, broken in boots resoled. Like I said, after 17 years of hard wear mine are still going strong.

what is a good boot with ankle support

IMHO purpose-built riding or snowboarding boots are best. I've worn bunny boots which I absolutely hate and I've ridden in pacs (Sorels & LaCross). For me pacs let my ankle roll too much. I've also ridden in my Danners and they're softer around the ankle then I like and most of my riding days are around zero and they're not warm enough.

Currently I ride with the Polaris brand riding boot from 05. I don't remember the model name and I don't know who Poo contracted to make them but they're great for me...great ankle support and warm. I've worn them in -40 conditions and not had cold feet. There are better boots out there, and other than Poo going a bit cheap on the lacing eyelets, I've been impressed so far.

I'm thinking my next pair will be some HMK Boa's.

I have 2 pairs of Danners one pair of GTX 10" 600 grams and a pair of the high dollar 10" hand sewn Canadians. That being said I don't wear either of them riding anymore since I value them too much :D. I used to wear the GTX's riding but stopped when they started getting torn up from the boards on my sled.

I wear my Klim Adrenalines riding and love them. BTW COTTON socks are 90% of peoples problems with their feet getting wet because they don't breath and sweat gets them wet and then your feet get cold both hunting and riding. I reccomend the Under Armour socks as they are desinged to breath very well. Also too much insulation is a bad thing too for the fact that your feet get too warm, sweat and then get cold. I bought a pair of 1000 gm boots and had this happen, then went back to 600 gm boots and my feet are happy again both hunting and riding.

I wear Klim socks. Not sure what fabric they are...I used to wear full wool and also a wool blend. I like the wool blend the best.

Boot Options

As I stated in a previous thread on boots, before recent forum improvments, I do not get as much sled time as a lot of you (through the season), but wet feet has been an issue each season until last winter. I have only worn Sorrels, HMK's and RU Outside's Bridger Boot, but all left me with wet feet. Last year I picked up a pair of 11" boots from Cabela's and had no issue with wet feet. We rode four (4) days at Revy and three (3) days in WA and I had dry feet for all the rides. This is a big improvement from previous years where I would wring out my socks (wool) mid ride or pour liquid out of the boot at the end of the day. The boots are $99.99:

Cabela's 8-Point 1,000-gram Insulated 11" Hunting Boots Item:XK-812395.

I saw very little damage to the sole from my ride time on an 06 summit.

As an afterthought on wet feet (since it came up)

Try treating your feet with spray antiperspirant. Works like a champ.

For socks I wear Smartwools. A bit pricey at $25 but worth every penny IMO.

4 guys in our group wear danners or equivalent huntin boots, waterproofed and gators, after 3 days in revy they had a tough time gettin to dry, my kamiks were dry, for more ankle support i am tryin a set of hmk's off cl this year, will post

I ride snowmobile for a living doing snowmobile patrol in the Black Hills. Last year I rode 5200 miles for work and 800 miles for fun. I spend 4-5 days a week 6-10 hrs a day in my boots and found the Rocky Blizzard Stalker to be the best boots I have worn. I have had Sorel boots in the past which worked only fair. I also had a pair of RU Outside boot which were miserable (always wet and had little ankle support and a weak sole). The Rocky's have held up excellent the past 3 seasons with no noticable wear on the sole's. They stay dry and warm and have good ankle support and a sturdy sole. They are comfortable like a hunting boot but warm like a pac boot. The 1200 grams may be too warm for some but work excellent for me. They do have the hooks but they seem to be high enough to be covered by my bibs and have not caused any seat damage. I bought mine on sale for about $110.
