Any way to spice up a '89 Indy 500?

So I've got a couple of these laying around that both need fixing; and I might go ahead and do that for this winter but I was wondering if there is any way to spice one of these up a bit while I'm into them. There is pretty much no aftermarket that I can find around anymore...so any thoughts would be nice. Thanks!

I've got an 89 500 mod their fun to fix up getting them up off the ground is a big help plus get the bars way upso you don't break your back when you stand up:face-icon-small-win extra lite susp. saves a bunch of weight but kind of spendy
but you can make custom high seat and long track pretty cheap

good luck
post some pics of your build !

could change the gearing, front suspension, rear suspension, bars, hood, seat. pretty much everything. depends what you are going for. a buddy of mine and I both modded out 93 indy's and the list of mods is almost endless.. let me know you're goal and I can let you know some options and where to find parts. Great project sleds, ALOT cheaper then a new one for parts and still alot of fun! good luck!!!

I was mostly shooting for a bit more power...probably via pipe(s). I've got a M7 thats my good sled; these are the originals we had when we first started sledding. This will be used for chores and farting around when the snow isn't all that deep and rocks are around. :face-icon-small-ton

Basically I'm just shooting for more fun when I'm dinkin' around the place, and leave the mountain riding for the newer sled. I'd love to stick a 136" or even just a paddle track on the 121"; but I'm also not gonna spend too much money when its not my main sled.

The easiest susp upgrade would be an xtras-10. seems to work alot better then the xtra-12 and there are alot of them out there.

I have no idea what these are. Sorry; any help?

The riser is a good idea. I've thought of that before. Also you don't want pictures of these ol' girls, they've had a rough life. :face-icon-small-sho

the cheapest up grades that make the most difference would be

long track 133 or 136 find a old xlt track or? and put 8 tooth drivers on it to clear the 1.5'' paddle

xlt front shocks get them up of the ground

my buddy put banshee bars on his worked sweet

make a high rise seat yourself

you can still find pipes around but not worth the $

Thanks for the info guys. I'll see what I can get done.

Also I suppose any more power would just require a swap to a bigger engine huh?

yeah, if the stock engines work, I would just leave them be. I have a 93XLT 580 motor with about 6k on it and I don't dare touch it. It runs like a dream now and any engine mods would just be tempting fate. lol

Well the reason for the work on them is one had the primary clutch grenade and the other must have had a crank seal fail and burned down a piston. But what does a guy expect from a '89 with ~5500 miles. :face-icon-small-ton
