Any input for Cat 900 / VA Rev build?

I'll answer the ones that I have experience with:

1. Pretty much all the 900s are the same hardware wise. Some had decompression holes, which you may or may not want. You'll want to make sure you get a 1M, not a ZR as the ignition timing is different on the flatland sleds.
Many people will say that the timing was better on the '03, but I've not been able to find any concrete evidence that this is true. According to the Cat race dept. all the mountain 900s had the same timing.

If you're going to big bore it anyway, there are a couple people parting out sleds in the 1M section and you may be able to pick up a bottom end and a couple bad cylinders. I'd recommend welding the crank if you're putting more than stock power to it. They don't break often, but they will twist.

2. Don't know, we do our own porting, run pump gas and single pipes.
3. ^^
4. I would say not much, but if you've got it apart, it's also not gonna hurt anything.
5. We are running cat clutches and belts on all our big bore 900s, and our 1500 triple. I'm sure there are other options that work also, but we've had no serious problems with the cat clutches. (not stock weights/springs/helix)
6a. Reeds seem to clean up the bottom end some, but other than that, not much difference. If they're cheap, they may be worth it, but otherwise, I'm not sure I'd worry about it.
6b. If you are careful, adding some timing on the top end can help. The safest way is to get the CDI reprogrammed to add a couple degrees only on the top end. Timing keys can get you quite advanced in the mid-range, and stock is pretty lean there anyway.

Also, I guess this should have been asked first, are you going EFI or carb? My dad and I run all carbs, but we've been around some EFI mods that worked well. If you go EFI, you need an '04 or newer motor, and the EFI and carb bottom ends will not interchange.
As far as timing the 03 did have more advanced timing in 03 which was the same as zr. I sent my box back to cat in 03 and they reprogrammed it to which the 04 and newer specs are.

Do you have room for twin pipes? I would do that and the cdi timing mod. Have Ruth fit you some Jaws D pipes in there if possible. That would kick butt on what you have now. I don't think you will gain enough with the 975 vs. the dollar spent. Maybe do that first and then if you are still not happy you will be dialed in for a 975 kit anyway.

My thoughts...

Twins..... I would love to but both money and available space under the hood are tight! The single SLP pipe is fit, the mag side custom chassis brace is installed, motor plate and motor and TEAM secondary are in. Fast trax is waiting for me to send over an exhaust valve assembly to make sure nothing is interfering. Once I get it to them and get the good word I'll go pick it up and get started on plumbing / electrical. Hope to have it on the snow by middle of February!

oh, I imagined it was done at this point and you were wanting more already...My bad. As far as a future big bore, I would think the single pipe will limit you more than the porting. Sounds like a tight fit and I totally understand the cost of it all adds up quick. Cost always limits me as well... I understand that all too well.
I think you have a very cool project no matter what and you will enjoy it !

DoubleA... anyone...

Fired it for the first time. LOVE the sound of my new REV! :face-icon-small-coo We are thinking of starting at 420 mains (350's w/power jets at 3 turns out) w/needle full rich to start. Has a single SLP pipe / porting / slight head cut. Going to be using 2-3 gallons race per tank. We will be adding a little oil to the tank for insurance as well.

Geared 19 / 43 with 8 tooth 2.86 drivers. Think its right around 2.07

Where do you think the jetting will end up at? Any advice before we take it out for the first time?

Are you mixing your oil? If not and you can get to the oil pump take a wire with a hook in one end and with the engine running pull the pump arm wide open to get the air out of the lines and to add a little extra oil to the bottom end..

No, still using oil pump but will be mixing the first couple tanks for insurance. Thanks for the tip.

Here's a pic of the sled. I have yet to load the under hood pics on Photobucket.

No recoil adapter. Not really needed. It pulls over fine and starts quickly! Just have to get her tuned in now. Power jets will make it a little easier. The clutching and gearing will take some time I'm thinking. Stock primary and TEAM secondary. gearing is 19 43.

From what I understand the motor plate from 1200psi doesn't come drilled for motor mounts, correct? Did you set your clutch center to center the same as a stock rev, or something else? (and did you end up using the Yami 8dn belt?)
