Another towing question......

Didn't you know that in order to pull even just a regular 2 place open trailer that you need a 1 ton dually diesel 4x4 lifted 12" and pushing at least 600rwhp?! Just kidding, I think your setup will do fine, but that seems to be the attitude around these parts:rolleyes:.

3:42's. Ouch! It may never see overdrive ever, I mean ever with that ratio and a covered trailer? Sure it will pull it but in terms of pulling it efficiently, that's a pretty tall gear package.

It'll pull fine, better than you'ld expect. With good tires and some kind of a load leveling system (sway bar) that pickup will do fine, we pull with the same pickup, keep it in 3rd, keep it out of overdrive.

On a side note...DO NOT EVER DO THIS, but Catrider and zrt3 can vouche for me...a '94 T-Bird with a 3.8 and 3.73 gears will pull a 14' long x 6' tall x 7' wide enclosed trailer loaded with 2 sleds 65 mph on the flats...slows down bad up hills...40 ish, but it'll still do it. Never gonna take it in the mountains...bad news for mr. transmission.

You usually are more traction and speed limited by the winding roads than hp limited in the mountains anyways.

It should pull just fine, but you will have to leave it in 3rd - no overdrive. Mine with 4.10's is running at 2300 or so in OD at 70mph. With your gearing you should be right around there in 3rd. Maybe just a little higher, but that will just give you better power anyway.

I just got back from a quick drive with the truck ONLY....at 70mph in 3rd it was turning about 2450rpms. I guess I can live with that......now just have to worry about slowing down.:rolleyes:

Even running EMPTY, with 3.42's it will downshift if you run over a shadow, or change radio stations.

Yep, I've driven the 3.42's out here(hills/mountains); and even the small hills will make it grab 2nd gear. And that's empty, on any incline w/ that trailer; you'll rarely leave 2nd gear.

I'm not saying the pickup won't handle it, just get used to your tach being at 5900 rpms consistently.

Keep an eye on the tranny temp. If you don't have a good gauge, I would invest in one.

X2, Are you insane? Hell, I pull a 2 place open with a 1 ton 4x4 Big Block:eek:

But it's 3 times the truck I need for that little combo...

Your setup will do fine, but the engine will be screaming up the hills with that gear set up, just take it easy, there's no point doing 75 with a load that weighs as much as your truck!:beer;

HAHAHAHA...........that's funny right there.

I test drove a 5.3 with 3.42's and it felt like a v6 compared to the 4.10's I'm used to. Not dissing your truck cmanz, I just thought that comment was funny. :);):beer;

That is funny I dont care who ya are!

I do question Fords Powerstroke with 3.73's sometimes too tho. The bullydog chip helps but I wish I had went with different gears and I have a diesel with tons of stump pulling torque so I cant imagine 3.42s in anything thats gonna be used for pulling. Truck will be sayin "I think I can I think I can..." goin up and the trailer will be passin you up goin downhill.

Another thing to consider is mirrors, you're going to need better ones for sure. I towed with my dad's truck on Friday and you couldn't see a damn thing around his 7x12 enclosed.
