Alpine Turbo Front Mount Fire

Thanx for all the support, I was not going to evan discuss this on here, Because I did not know why this burnt in the first place. I didn't mean to blame the wrong people. I had the sled built at a respectful dealer, who puts out quite a few in a year and only deals with Alpine kits. He backed me for the claim. If the insurance gave me a decent price it would have been over. No complaints, just get a another,,,, BUT when the appraiser went to research at 2 other dealers in Calgary, the dealers told the appraiser that the front mount turbos catch fire and they would not even take one on trade. SO thats why i received such a low settlement. Again I am not complaining I just do not want this to happen to anyone else. Thank you. Lets start a new thread

Is that a halon extinguisher? You know they are illegal? However they are the only ones to have on a turbo, ABC powder will destroy your engine with one shot at a running sled.

Ive seen a Mcxpress go up in flames also extinguisher is a must along with REPLACEMENT insurance. Capri in bc

Sounds like the typical dealer around here, bash the competition, especially when they hand you your a$$ in the mountains. And why wouldn't they take one in trade? the resell on the front mount turboed sleds is as good or better than anything out there.

Sounds to me like the Insurance company is just trying to screw you. Why don't you call Alpine Motorsports and get a list of "comparable sales" check out the history in swap meet in the old forums. What did Jason Earl's Apex just sell for? $30,000+. Do your homework and don't let them off with 10K of your $$.

sounds like you need to get your ins company to call alpine they are a very reputable yamaha dealer & the builder of the kit i would think they would be the only ones to give a value on the sled they had a couple for sale for over 30000$.

from an insurance perspective, you need to insure your sled, auto, home, life for what you have into it or more if possible. it is called extra equipment for auto, bike, sled ect... for example, if you have a truck with, a huge stereo, nerf bars, roll bar, big wheels, tires, custom paint, whatever.... if you dont tell the insurance of your add on upgrades, they only owe for the replacement of the stock vehicle because, that is what you represented to the insurance company that they are insuring. same goes for bikes and sleds.

you have to tell the insurance company exactly what you have to get replacement. if you dont divulge that info to them to get a cheaper premium, you are playing with fire (no pun intended). you are gambling you wont need to replace the unit due to misfortune.

sorry for your misfortune, everyone should research and be honest with what they are insuring, if you dont, you gamble. when you gamble, you can lose. when you lose, you have no one to blame but yourself. never assume ANYTHING, always check to make sure you are covered. ski

Just insured my Nytro for replacement. Must insure for the value of the sled with toys. Insured in Calgary for $1100.00/$250.00 Deductable/PL/PD/Fire/Theft/Collosion.

Go with an ANSUL "Cleangaurd". There a gas unit..no powder - Environmentally freindly - and no thermal shock like CO2. I'll check with our R&D guys in the new year about doing a little production run of 2 lb stainless units with vehicle brackets.

Too bad about your sled, but thanks for posting the story. It's a good reminder for all to upgrade insurance when you upgrade your sled. Spend the $250 on an appraisal when your mods done and take it in to your agent.

yeah that sucks about the insurance . As soon as i finshed up my turbo on my sled i called and upped my insurance, all they did is ask what i did to my sled and what the vaule is. the rate didnt go up that much either but my deductable sure did

another fire...

Hey maybe the guy I saw will come on here and tell his part of the story...

Sun Dec 16 in Gorman in Golden, there was a group of about 4 turbo Apex guys, all of them MCX except for one Alpine.

The Alpine came down at the embarrasing end of the tow rope with the owner indicating that he had " a small fire" up there.

I don't have any more details, but thought I'd add one more data point to the curve.

cheers and happy holidays sledbuddies!
