Alpine Turbo Front Mount Fire

I would like to give a warning to all owners, I put 33000 into a 07 apex everything was done that could of been done. It burnt down in Revy, the insurance has been giving me the run around. Since I did not have replacement insurance they are only giving a fraction of what i put in. So I hired a private investigator to give a estimate. He found that the Calgary Yamaha dealers will not evan take a Alpine front mount on trade, they said it is not worth any more than 15000. Because they burn down to easily. The Yamaha dealers F!@%ED me. And they sold me the whole sled all complete. I had 800km on it and it was the best sled i ever had.

Well its a common thing to hear of a fire here and there that much heat upfront something has to give :( but i don't think they screwed you it was just a lack of insurance man if i had that much in my sled i sure would have had replacement insurance

chitty,who did the install?

My insurance told me you can not have replacement on a sled. 1st year 30% off the top and goes from there. I dont feel that i am getting screwed from the insurance. But i do feel that Alpine has not done enough research with the front mount to be pushed on the dealers to sell as a package. If after a year the dealers wont touch this mod. I am letting everyone know not to buy new or used. Mabye 1 year ago I made the mistake, I did not do enough research.

First off........Sorry to hear of your misfortune :(

But.........You had a Mod sled that you put "800 km" on and it was "the best sled I ever had." How is this the dealers fault? I presume most of those miles were put on last Winter, but if not I still don't see how they are at fault. Everybody wants the power, but don't want to hold themselves responsible when issues arise.

Sorry dude........It does suck that it happened! Good luck!

OK, I am not bashing Yamaha as a whole, I bought a 08 nitro with a stage II because I love the handling and quality. I have a problem with the Alpine package. And yes 280hp on a Apex, is the best sled I have ever ridden. I am not looking for sympathy, I AM GIVING A WARNING. DEALERS WILL NOT TOUCH THIS MOD PACKAGE.

I'd be looking for a new insurance company. I have full replacement cost on my 07 Apex with McXpress. I specifically asked my agent about it. I'm with Co-Operators. You better get full coverage on the Nytro! Sorry about the Apex.

sorry to here of your loss but i have 4 years 6000km on my alpine kit without a prob.my guess would be something came lose or you got oil on something around the turbo somehow they do not just catch on fire unless something got on the turbo somehow to ignite it this is not a design problem.lots & lots of these kits out there very few have had fire probs have seen pretty much every turbo kit have fire probs because they are hot but it wasn't the kit makers fault it was the person doing the maintainence .more than likely it was a gas or a oil line on the turbo come lose.mabey your dealer wont touch the alpine kits but allot will i think you are just getting the run around.

most likely a cracked header or bolts holting turbo on came loose and exhaust leak caused the fire, I have seen a few others, and it has nothing to do with alpine. this is something that can and doe,s happen on all the front mounts if you don,t due the required checks and maintenace needed on a mod sled, if it lasted 800 km with out problems then there was nothing wrong with the install,

maintenace is definatley an important part, but ive seen 3 different examples of chitty installs from bad wiring to cracked oil line fittings(overtightened)and the best one of all was not resetting the cam timing from stock mode, you wanna expierence something that runs like chit, hola. The guys i deal with now have never had a fire and i don't know how many thousands of kits they've installed !

Sorry about your deal.....Install is everything, and even with my rear mount I check things with a fine tooth comb after every ride....all you need is something to come loose and presto fire.....there is lost going on under the hood of a turbo....

I also have a Alpine front mount and have had 2 fires. Both on the first trip out in the past 2 years. It has nothing at all to do with the kit. It is install.....install......install. Both times was due to dealer running fuel lines in the wrong place. I recomend to anyone buying a turbo (front or rear mount) to make sure you have someone who knows what the pluck they are doing. Spend the money and have someone do it right. Make sure to look things over every ride. By the way....I love my Alpine kit when im not playing fire chief. :beer;

I am sorry for your loss. I would start with the installer and then look at your own maintenance before you come on and blast all front mounts in general.

I do not agree in stereotypeing all Alpine or front mount kits.

The main issue is these things put out an enormous amount of heat!!! If every precaution has not been taken and routine maintenance doesn't take place after each ride to ensure clamp tightness and hose routing/chaffing, heat shields are in tacked, leaks are addressed etc.....Your playing with fire!!! As much as most people think you can just slap these things on a go..........Not in my mind!! In my mind you get out what you put in. A good sound routine maintance of the items above after every ride and you will have many miles of great boosting!!!

You also really need to keep an eye on the fuel tank fittings on the front mounts to ensure you are not having any leaks. I have heard and seen many of these that the installer used the wrong type of sealant on the fittings that did not hold up. If the fittings leaks it drips right on to the header heat shield......Not a good thing!!!! I have put a time limit on my sealant and after that I will remove clean and reinstall the fittings to ensure I do not have any leaks!!!

Good luck and again sorry for your loss!!!

Co - Signed . Frt mounts are a hardcore mod , know you're stuff , take precautions , and understand the risk .

LIVE BY THE TURBO, DIE BY THE TURBO:mad:

sorry about the dead soilder:(:(

best mod for a turbo sled is a fire extingisher, at least if it starts on fire you can minn. the damage!!! only a few pounds in the backpack and it saves the soilders from a total meltdown(or get better insurance):D:D

As much chit as I've taken from these guys on here :face-icon-small-hap.This is a pretty good idea and should be included with any Turbo kit.
