Any one ever stay there or have any dealings with them? Just booked a big cabin for a week in July for a family vacation. Hows the fly fishing around there?

Any insight would be great. Thanks

Almont is a fun place - pure Colorado, it sits in a pine-covered Canyon with three rivers intersecting there. Rivers are up now due to spring snowmelt, should be around June 10th.

I don't fish, but it's definitely a fishing hot-spot!
Fly shop right in town.

Have fun!

Almont fishing = Excellent!

One of my favorite places to fish. I spend a lot of time up there in the summer. The East river and Taylor meet at Almont to form the Gunnison. Take your pick, they are all gold medal water. The Taylor below the dam will give you a shot at Bow's and Brown's to 15lbs if you are patient. They get HUGE here feeding on Mysis shrimp being blown out of the dam. On the East, it will be your typical July patterns, smaller shallower river but it holds some awesome fish. Go up around the Roaring Judy hatchery. You can also fish the Gunny. There are several BIG, DEEP holes right at or below Almont. I've caught browns up to 7lbs in those holes. Drifting woolly buggers are has worked well for me. The key there is to get it down deep. Use a lot of lead and bounce off the bottom. If you aren't getting snagged occasionally, you aren't deep enough. I know you'll be there in July, but I'll tell you anyway....Starting in late August, the Kokanee run up from Blue Mesa. This is one the most fun times to fish there, as you can catch 3-4lb kokes untill your arm is too tired to continue! Anyway, have fun and let us know how you do. :beer;:beer;

August brings more then just Kokes...........

The top water fishing if timed right is unbeliveable..

I hit stonefly hatch one weekend that is still a all time best.

I forgot to mention the shrimp corp did above.

Either way you should have good fishing on my snowmobile tracks :)

LOL Each week of snowmelt reveals a new set of snowmobile tracks from December.... Some snowshoe tracks emerged today that were from early January!

Thanks for all the info guys. We are mainly going there to celebrate dad's 60th birthday. I don't think I have seen the old man more excited about a fishing trip in my life. He has been tying flys like crazy. He also booked us a float trip for a day. We've never floated a river, so that should be something new.

Another question, what is the Poison Ivy like there? My brother is allergic to it, so he is kind of worried about it.

Thanks again, gonna be a great trip.

Can't speak for the river your on. It does occur here, but it's sporadic and usually sparse. You'll find it below 8K' but if you know what your looking for you should have no trouble avoiding the occasional viney patch.

When you get into town, stop by the fly shop in Almont and they can probably tell you more about any existence of Poison Ivy. The rivers are up, but we definitely had an early peak this year. Head up Taylor Canyon, we always see folks finding great fishing spots up there. Some right below the reservoir dam wall. I hear there's lots of good stuff for fisher types up Spring Creek too.... (10mi north east of Almont)

Have fun!

Food was ehhh..bla

We all ate up at the restaurant up there...all our food was served still frozen inside...I think they just reheated some TV dinners like in the movie "European Vacation" when they go to France.

The restaurant was nice and service good, just next time we will drive up to CB or down to Gunnison to Garlic Mike's and/or "The Trough".

Bummer, sounds like you got the shaft

I eat there on occasion, lunch is always good, I only eat the fish n chips in the summer time for dinner or the always safe burger with bacon. keep on driving north or south around breakfast time twice now I have had questionable food at breakfast time. The "W" in gunny or Mcgills in CB are the spots I'd hit.

Too the org poster

The fishing is off the hook!

It is just now starting to rock n role, there is still some snow up high that as it melts it will dirty the East river water making it hit or miss at times. Taylor is always nice and spring creek near the Campground is ussually good a little higher up near the Res you can find some pockets of trout above or below the "old boston" cabin (I think it says old boston)

I Hope this non stop rain we have had stops before you get here

fishing in the rain is never fun

East River behind Mnt CB up bush creek rd has some killer fishing and duck hunting too

Yes, we go downtown on Tuesday night, sit across from The Talk and hunt hippies. Just don't have the guts to pull the trigger, they're so helpless!

Well……………

Me downing a cat in Irwin would go something like this:

1. I would be Tased by the oh so friendly forest ranger, who coincidently had already determined the cat to be a lynx before seeing it!

2. I would have to make it past the picket line at the trail head, them old ladies from Montrose respond to all Animal Rights Violations.

3. If I managed to make it out without being arrested or shot, the friendly and never biased local news would have my picture all over the paper. Alan would be seen quoting ………………………..............................................................

4. A emergency wilderness declaration would be enacted as I had consumed fossil fuels and killed a animal at the same time.

I’m sure I missed something but it would certainly not turn out in my favor !

Husker, sorry we hijacked your thread, I will be up that way in a few days I’ll give you a better idea of the conditions then ! One things for sure, make sure you tie up some caddis’s and some medium size salmon colored stimulators !

RP - you're pretty much right on. But you might have to deal with this pack of Q-Tips first: http://www.greatoldbroads.org/

To put your Lynx-Lion-Persian-Tabby cat idea in perspective, after driving through Almont a few times, my brother came up with the idea of a Bald Eagle Farm.

He's thoroughly convinced that someone has already started one just north of Almont - one day there's hundreds of them, the next day: nothing but a few nervous crows.

But we've been working on the details of how to complete with them ever since.
