AF canyon gates closed

Tried to go up AF canyon this morning. They turned us around at pay station. Said gates are closed at both trailheads. :(

Tibble is at 6200ft, hate to break it to ya but AF is done for the year....from the Tibble side at least. yeah it might snow 12" at the parking lot tomorrow (not likley) but it will be melted off completely come Thursday. Its too bad because the snow should be decent (by this seasons standards) up top.

Yea that's what I figured. Tibble had snow all the way down to the gates yesterday about 4 inches deep. Mutual dell side I couldn't see snow from the gate

A few years ago we were riding dirt on the lower half mile of trail with little or no snow in sight. It seems to me that this newly formulated 12 inch base rule came into effect the same time Snowbird started their cat skiing operation. Snowbird does own a lot of mineral basin (rope line and above). They own the top of miller hill, a good portion of upper mary ellen, and a little strip right down the middle of pagan bowl. Are they allowed to post the entire upper Mile of the road? There is a lot of Public (forest service) terrain up there. Actually it is All Public land except for those spots I have mentioned. Snowbird has cut a deal with the Forest service which allows them to operate a snowcat and collect revenue on forest service land in a "study" in exchange for snowbird donating an old snowcat to the forest service. It is Not the same long standing lease which allows for skiing of forest land within the resort which is Snowbird as we know it. As you can imagine, cat skiing in snowmobile ruts is probably not fun. Maybe I don't want to sled in cat ruts.. Can I post and claim this land for myself?? Doubtful. And beware, ski patrol will come down the road and claim you're trespassing. So what better way to keep boondockers off of your fresh ski lines than to just close the whole canyon, shut er down. I would like to see all you boys that ride guardsman pass make the long haul down into snake creek and up towards mineral. Trench Town Rock! You know what I'm talking about

And don't tell me it's shut down for road damage control. A few dozen sleds straight lining up that road does no more damage than your average 4 wheeler spinning doughnuts in the dust like will happen all summer long.

I'd agree, forest service guy I called to complain about illegally posted land by snowbird seemed to be on their side, a week later the gate is closed. I called to see if they would open it this week and . . . . . . . NO.

I just got back form Colorado and we ran into the same deal in a few spots, If its not outlined on the FS issued map I could give to cents about a cat skiing closure that we happen to run into. If the FS isn't willing to be straight forward and honest about it to the public. I told the guy telling us to get off the cat skiing designated area to take a hike and call the cops to come ticket me. Needless to say we had a great time riding. :face-icon-small-coo

The most hilarious deal about it was the areas within a stones throw of where we were riding that were indeed market on a map as non-motorized were completely untracked by anybody, including skiers. If the skiers want to put themselves into a situation where they are going to be confronted by evil snowmobilers then that's there problem, dont try and make it mine. It felt good telling off those doucebags. :bowl:

This reminds me I was going to call the FS district supervisor for the area we were in to ask them where the non-non-motorized designated areas were, sledding through skin tracks and post holes really sucks and greatly hinders my riding experience.
