RMK-rider,
I have an ABS 15 that I have been using this season. Price is about $900. If you can find one for about 10% off, I think you would be doing well. 2 charged canisters are included with it so that once you get it you can blow it off to experience what it is like, practice folding the bags back into the pack, and make sure the system actually works.
Fortunately, I have not had to use it so far, thankfully. I have heard great things about how effective they are. I have also heard from many and feel strongly as well that to completely rely on the pack to save yourself from doom would be extremely foolish.
I feel that a prudent rider would first take a comprehensive avalanche safety course, then use a beacon every ride, always check the avy report before each ride but do not take all report info as the gospel; use it as a guide. Do not get trapped into peer pressure, expecially from others riding with you that have not taken an avalanche course.
Try to get your riding buddies to buck up for one as well. Best of luck to ya.
