I was looking through an old thread like this and stumbled across somthing I didnt think about (wich is lots). Your shovel, provided its metal, can be used to melt snow for water. Not as ideal as a cup or mug but will still work.

You didn't say BSI... fail!

Are you an EMT? Medic? Big ups to you for that. I just got through EMT-B myself. Looking to start paramedic school in the fall probably.

retained the knowledge and use it daily, you should see my Jump Kit that lives in my truck

i carry most of that stuff as well, PLUS a deck of cards---heard from several guys that have a spent the night that once you get set up and have wood and everything, it gets FRIGGIN boring, thus the cards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep, paper and writing instrument is pretty important, especially if you end up doing any em-comm. Need a pencil (or pen, whatever) for finding where you are on a map with a compass...

we need to sticky one of these here in general. Gets way more traffic then AK.

Lots of great info. I'll add a few things based on a couple different times we got in a bind.

The cards or book is no joke, the nights are very long and boring. A headlamp that straps to your head is far better then any flashlight. Just go out in the dark and try cutting trees and carring wood while you try and hold onto a flashlight.
Those emergency space blankets are darn near worthless, carry a 8x10 tarp instead, you need something to keep you off the snow.
Snowshoes!!! If you need to walk out, it just might be a lifesaver.

I carry alot of these items in my pack too...altho I see a few more to try and squeeze in. The guys in our group pack 2 flares apiece in our packs, we seal them up in seal a meal type packaging to stay dry. The first one work good for a fire starter as well if your matches or lighter will not work. Always good to take some time when you are out, stop and try things to see how they work...that is how we found out the saws in the shovel handles only work on small branches as long as you are careful with them. Started carrying a pack saw to cut wood after that. Works great when boondocking in tight spots too:D
