I went out to pull the sled this morning and it started with some clunking sound. The noise went away in about a few seconds and the motor idles fine for the the next 4 minutes, but there was a heck of alota smoke coming out of the exhaust. Drove it onto the trailer shut it off, then pulled it again and the same clunking noise came as it started then died. Then it siezed and cannot pull the recoil. Took the top end apart and there was alot of oil in the case on the stator side where i believe it siezed. Both pistons look ok and the clutch side piston (PTO?) seems to move freely and fine. I'm guessing stator side (mag?) rod bearing? Thanks in advance for any help.

one moves fine, but the siezed one moves very little and takes more effort to push/pull it.

I have tied up the main on the stator side on my 800 several yrs ago. I could hear a "ting ting ting" when accelerating for two days before it died. Also would foul the plug on that cyl during that time - but in a weird way. Did yours offer any warning signs?

Not sure if the 99/600 was greased or lubed via gas/oil mix like the old skewl motors? The blocks are cast to doo either, so ....

If it is greased, the pocket for lube on the stator side is smaller than that on the PTO side (800 anyway) and runs dry quickest.

Dealer was able to replace bearing and seal, but it also took a piston with it too.
