97 Summit belt and clutch adjustment questions.

I've got a 97 Summit chassis, with the 670 engine from a 93 Mach 1 in it. I had an Ultimax 2 belt # 144-4353 on it and it worked fine. Last weekend I wrecked that belt, and put on my spare which was an Ultimax 3 # 144-4353U3. After I put that new belt on, the sled wouldn't idle, and it walked at low rpm. I brought the sled home and worked on it, thinking that I had a fuel problem as it had also been flooding all weekend. After I got that all taken care of I started it and it still wouldn't idle and tried to walk away again. I pulled the new belt off and it started up and idled and ran fine.

I think this new belt might be a little too wide, but I don't know how to adjust for that. Dayco lists a 138-4400 as the belt for the Mach 1, and 144-4353 as the belt for the Summit. I think the 138-4400 belt is a touch too long for the center distance of the clutches in the Summit chassis.

Is there any way I can adjust my primary for this slightly wider belt?

I believe there is an allen screw on the secondary. Loosen the locknut and screw it in a little to spread the secondary a little more. That will let the belt drop lower into the secondary thus giving more slack in the belt.

I've played with those screws a little bit, but I went the wrong direction from what you're saying. I found some dimensions online, and the Mach 1 belt is 13/64" longer than the Summit belt, and it's also 31 thousandths narrower than the Summit belt.

Does the belt need to sit down on the bushing in the middle of the primary, or is it ok to adjust my secondary so the belt sits lower there and higher in the primary?

If the belt isn't able to rest on the primary center then the belt is too wide.

If the belt is the same width as the original then you can adjust the secondary so the belt doesnt ride in it quite as high. That will reduce the tendancy to walk while idling.

The belt deflection will tell you how well it is adjusted. If the deflection is within spec (ck your owners manual) then you should be good.

if the new belt wont go all the way in the pri mary till it touches the shaft it is too wide i have a 2002 summit x 800 and the dealer told me about a new belt that they have for the o8 and o9s and told me it would work on my o2 i tried it and my sled tried to drive away even when the belt was down in secondary 1.5 inch so i gave up on the new belt went back to the 02 belt which the last three numbers is 127 its pricey but i have never had very good luck with aftermarket belts you usally have to adjust the diflction on evry after market belt of same part number and you dont have to on the oem s and the oem belts seem to last 2 or 3 times longer than after market and a 97 670 summit should be able to use the 127 belt i run that belt on my 98 670x and it works awesome get one or 2 seasons out of a belt when i ran the 067 belt the one listed for the 98 670x they only lasted two or three rides i do run gates and dayco belts on my kids sleds that are less power and they last for years if you try to run the 127 belt and have trouble then hit me up and ill try to help you out with your center to center diflection and clutch alignment i hope this helps have a great day dan;)
