Riding Big Sky Montana last weekend and starting hearing noises from my engine. (2005 Summit X). Got out of the trees and to the trail. Told my riding buds to stay out riding and I would head in. On the way back to the lot noise stayed the same until the engine stopped. I pulled the belt and hiked back to the truck.
Got home and pulled the clutch, seal retainer, and PTO main seal. Bearings looked OK. Pulled engine today and tore it down. Big end rod bearing on PTO side seized.
OK, the reason for all this blah, blah is that this is the second big end rod bearing failure we have had in our group. (2004 Summit X two years ago). I have been riding sleds and building these Rotax engines since 1971 and these are the only two big end rod bearing failures I have ever seen. Coincidence? Have I been sheltered from this failure? What the heck? Others see this?
And by the way, I have spent some time getting good clutching in it, no smoking hot clutches or frequent belt failures. Klotz synthetic oil. Also noticed that both rings were ON TOP of the alignment pins!! This thing was ready for a failure in more ways than one
Sorry for the long post, thinking out loud. (Pics coming)
