8.1L Suburban Opinions?

Looking at getting a 2500 Suburban with the 8.1 and getting rid of my duramax truck. I like the idea of being able to haul more people and keep everything inside as I don't use the box for much of anything anymore and tow a trailer when hauling anything. This is only used for towing and not a daily driver. Ive been getting around 10-11 mpg with my diesel and paying .50 a gallong more than gas so I figured the 8.1 cant be much worse. Any opinions on power and mileage along with the vehicle in general would be appreciated..

Let's stay on subject here. Plus ur full of shiat about ur cummins mileage. 8.1 imo opinion is the best gas engine out there for pulling. Good combo for what ur looking for.

I have a 2005 2500HD with the 8.1 Allison, 3.73 gears. I have run 285/75/16 and 265/75/16 tires on it.

Unloaded, I got 13.8-14.5 mpg @ 75-65 mpg respectivley on the interstate with the 265's, I get about 13.2-14 mpg on the interstate with the 285's. There was a slight reduction in fuel economy unloaded with the larger tires. It will probably be very similar with the 'Burb ... I would think you'd lose a little less power through the 4 or 6L85E tranny than the Allison, but the 'Burb weighs more .... so its probably a wash as far as unloaded highway driving. In town you'll probably get 9-10 mpg.

Towing my 16' enclosed snowmobile trailer that weighed at most 4,000-lb with two sleds and gear this truck didn't even break a sweat. It'd pull that at 75 mph down the interstate in OD. I would get between 8-9 mpg towing this trailer in virtually all weather conditions down the highway. Interestingly enough, I got exactly the same mileage with my 2000 5.3L with the same trailer and it wasn't even funny how much better the 8.1 pulled it. I also get exactly the same mileage pulling my dad's 26' Charmac, which is right aroun 6,000-lb with 3 sleds and gear. Its more difficult to pull that trailer in OD @ 75 mph down the interstate ... it will hunt for 4th and 5th on the flats, 3rd up grades.....all of this is with the 285 tires mind you....If you have 4.10 gears and 245 tires, you will be better set up than I will and it probably won't hunt as much with a trailer that big.

In another week I'll tell you how well this setup does with a really big trailer, as I'm going to pick the new one I just ordered up .... so I'l be making the trip from Nampa ID to Vernal UT with this same truck, but with a 31' encosed trailer that will probably clock in at somewhere around 5,500-lb empty. I'm fully expecting to get between 7.5-8.5 mpg towing this trailer mixed 65/75 mph driving.

I will let you know how it goes.

Bottom line: No, the 8.1L is not a mileage queen, but its quiet and it always starts when its cold. Its cheaper to buy, own, refuel and insure.

Are you gonna win any races with it? No .... but, its a setup that works very well for what it was intended for overall.

8.1 2500 4x4 crew cab with the alison here. Running 315's with 3.73's. Running around town, to work and back, hauling the boat (21' direct drive) I see right around 10. Running empty on the a long trip at about 60 it pulled almost 14 for 1600 miles. Pulling an enclosed 20' steel trailer with 4 yamaha's and all our gear to WY and back it ran about 7.5 and primarily used 4th as it wouldn't shift to OD in tow/haul. With 4.10's it probably would, but that's not what I have. Mileage is about the same as my last dodge with the 5.9 gasser and it's twice the truck and will actually accelerate up a 6% grade instead of hoping to make the top of the hill:)

Who said anything bout a cummins?

Who said anything bout a cummins?

Any time anyone makes a thread in this forum about anything that isn't a generic jacked up diesel you always get the crowd raving about how the diesel they have gets 500 mpg because of the DieselPorpoise chip and 37" tires they put on it never understanding the fact that when you don't program your speedometer for the larger tires your factory fuel economy calculator becomes completely worthless and you're also wearing out your transmission a ****load faster by not gearing it lower.

So he was just being pre-emptive :)

The post must've been removed somehow. It just went way of subject telling him to get a cummins because he got 24-28mpg. He didn't even say anything about the 8.1. Sorry. Back to the main topic.

8.1

I have a 01 suburban with the 8.1 and 3.73 gears and love it except for milage pulling my 35' haulmark we get about 6mpg. But has 230,000 miles on motor without being touched except for new plugs at 150,000 and new trany at 180,000. Would like to update but they quit the 8.1 so I'll run this one till it's dead then drop a crate motor in. If it has a hitch it will pull it!

You got any pics of this rig? Would love to see it with the trailer hooked up :)

I would like to see that too! I would be pulling a 7'x27' enclosed with 4-5 sleds in it and would hope to get 9-10mpg.

Ryan, I had an 01 crewcab with 8.1 and it got 14 once. 4:10 gears. 12 on interstate. 9-10 was about the worst it would get. 7-8 pulling. My buddy had an 01 gmc and we went to steamboat sledding. 600 miles each way. 6.5 going down and 5.5 coming back. Didn't miss many gas stations. He did get 2 tickets though. They do pull awesome. Everyone I ever seen used oil. Mine never leaked any or smoked. If the dummy light came on it was 2 quarts low on oil. They probably would get better mileage if they had taller gears. I don't think diesels get enough better to justify the price but you forget about the price difference after you buy them. It is when you see your monthly fuel bill that you start squalling. It is not like you put the extra 5-6-7000 in an account and save it for fuel. Your fuel bill will go up. Good luck on whatever you buy.

Working as a G.M. tech I might be a little bias but, Damn good engine. Really the only down fall of the 8.1 in a suburban is that you don't get the allison transmission but the hydromatic 4L80E. The engine is down tuned a little for that reason. In all the years that they have been out I have yet had to replace one. Worst I have seen was the factory left out the lifter guides on the left bank and at 25,000 miles 1 lifter spun in the bore and wiped out the cam. Hope for 14 but expect 6-10:face-icon-small-win

I will try to take some when i get a chance, If you wan't to get 9-10 better be down hill most of the way. My trailer is 8X35 triple axle and with 6 long tracks in plus people and gear we averaged 5.5 from Bowman ND to Ryan Park WY.But you just set the cruz and go to the next gas station because you can pass eveything else. The only thing I found that pulls it better is my 2011 F350 with the 6.7 diesel.:becky:

personally I think the 4l80 is a better tranny for fuel economy, I found my suburban with 8.1 3.73,s pulled a consistent 1-2 mpg better then my buddies 8.1 allison pickup with 4.10,s...his was better in the hills but not by much.. if you keep it down around 55 mph..fuel economy is pretty decent..if you run faster..down it goes...I think a gear vendors over drive box would be the ticket for fuel economy on the highway...

has anyone tried a programer in one ? if so did it improve the shift and mileage thanks

I have the Hypertech programmer for mine ... I never messed with the transmission shift points at all because I still wanted my tow/haul switch to work ... I think if you start messing with the factory shift points it messes with that, I never really got a straight answer from Hypertech about it.

The only thing I really used the programmer for was to take the top speed limiter off and to program for the 265 or 285 tire size (stock was 245) ...

But, I did make a few trips with the 87 octane vs. the 91 octane settings. I saw absolutley the same fuel economy with both settings with their respective octane fuels ... That might make a difference at sea level, I dont know, but I sure couldnt tell it towing in the mountains.

This is also on a totally %100 bone stock motor too, I don't even have so much as a K&N air filter on this thing.
