7000 rpm

i have a 1998 vmax 600. the problem that we are having is that we can only get 7100 max rpms out of it. we rebuilt the motor two seasons ago. just rebuilt the secondary clucth, and the primary has around 1000 miles on the rebuild. tried a new belt. don't know what to do next. any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks troy

Post with more information. Did it just start? Gradually go worse? Does it miss? Does it bog? It could be a lot of things. When was the last time the carbs were cleaned? Are your weights in your clutches for your elevation? Do the weights have wear spots in them. If you cleaned the carbs, did you check the reeds for wear or chips? To narrow it down to see if it is one of the cylinders, while idleing, you can pull one plug wire and replace, repeat with each cylinder. It should make the same difference in how it runs each time. If you have one that you pull and it does not make as much of a difference, then that cylinder, carb, reed, spark plug cap, etc. is suspect. Helps to narrow things down. I would also recheck your clutches. Make sure your secondary spring is in the right position. With the belt off, roll your secondary to see if you have a bearing going bad in the drive or suspension. If you haven't done so, check on http://www.totallyamaha.com/ for loads of information, setups, specs, etc. Hope you find your problem.
