700 or 800

I am curious to what you guys think about the pros and cons between the 7s and 8s. I have ridden a edge 700 151 for the past 5 years but recently sold it looking to update. I have ridden a few 07 and 08 700s but have not yet gotten on a new 800. judging from all the edge 800s i have been on i would go with the 7 every time. i have been told the new 8 is pretty impressive but i like the durability of the 7. i want your opinions. let me know what you think.
i like the idea of the PC5 but is this an option for a 7?
thanks

Search on this, there was a topic a couple weeks ago that had the info you are looking for.

I had the D7 and have the D8 now. The D7 was a great sled, best 700 made and was bulletproof for me. I had a milled head on it and it would run with my 800 up high (when it was stock). But the D8 has mroe torque and gets going much better (especially hill climbing). With the head mod I have on my D8 now it would tear my 700 a new one. My D8 hasn't had any issues *knock on wood* and has been a great sled.

If interested, it is for sale in my sig. Thinking of buying the new Pro R sled.

I would go for the 700. It is by far the most reliable of the two.

I really think that is a little exaggerated. I agree that there were a lot more issues with the D8 than D7. However, with the 2010 update and better fuel control, I think the D8 is solid. Many might laugh at that, but a bigger concern for me is the voltage regulator. I've been told that the D7 and D8 share that part.

i honestly havnt seen a d8 that would run with my d7 when i was running a single pipe. ive switched with one guy and he thought i had a pipe he was very shocked that it would walk away from his 8 up the hill that was when i first got it had 100 or so mi on it and he had 300+. then another guy we switched he was an older guy i come back down from a climb i could only make 3/4 of the way up from my previous climb on my 7 i told him it was a turd and he wasnt to happy with me or the sled lol. not saying there are no good running 8s just i havnt seen one. just like a good running m-1000 i never seen one until last week put a hurtin on my 7 but mine also wasnt running up to par polaris cant figure it out?

is the supposed extra torque of the 800 worth the risk of reliability?
I honestly havent had a problem going where i want with my old edge but its always more fun to go farther! how much better is the cfi 7 than the old edge 7? thanks for your input keep it coming!

i had a fully built slp 700 "edge" with twin slp race twins i was a 2x jackson hole champ sled, not with me on it of course lol but i think my cfi 700 makes a little more power definitly on the bottom end due to the cfi my 700cfi only has twin pipes. the 700 edge had porting case porting big carbs ect ect. but the one thing your not looking at is the iq chassis is light years ahead of the edge not even a comparison for handleing. best is to ride it for a couple hours

yeah i have been on several iq sled and really like the way they handle. i am just torn between the 7 and 8. also i was doing some looking around last night and i have not found a clear desription of the pcv. do they make it for a 7?

Yes, they do make the pcv for the 7's. I ride an 08 d7 and I am about 230lbs and am extremly happy with it. Mine does have the slp performance edition kit on it which helps, but I also ride with a buddy who has an 07 d7 that is stock and both sleds have been great. I have never really had a good comparison against a d8 so I can't help you much in that area but depending on what kind of riding you do, it never hurts to go a little bigger.

The PC-5 or the PC-3 is the same for the POLARIS CFI 600/700/800 4 injector set-up.

It will NOT work on the 2 injector CFI RUSH / SHIFT

I have a 2007 D7, 3800 TROUBLE FREE miles and love the sled, my bud, same sled 2600 TROUBLE FREE MILES.

Would I like a lil' more power of the 800, YES

would I accept the uncertainty of the unreliability, NO.

I'm just NOT convinced they have the "issues" of the 800 fully resolved, that's all.

If/when they do, I'd buy an 800

I'm very happy with my 08 D7.2200 plus miles with nothing but oil, gas, plugs and a belt or two.

Sure I would like a little more torque from the 800 but reliability has been an issue for a small amount of 800 owners.
Until all the bugs have been proven to be worked out of the 800's I would recommend the 700 .

With the 2011's going on snowcheck this Monday Polaris and the dealers will be offering big money off 2010's.

My buddy rented a 09 RMK 800 and I raced him with my 09 RMK 700, I pulled him every time. If all stock 800s were like that one I would go with the 700.

Get the 700, I was in your shoes two years ago and decided to go this route and glad I did. With a few modifications, there are very few 8's that can keep up with my sled. Lower the gears to 19:42 and you will have a sled that can already compete with rev 8's and polaris 8's.

Look, the 700 is an amazing sled. Like I have said, best 700 ever built. I'm a Polaris guy, but a D7 will not "beat" a D8. Obviously there are a ton of variables to consider, but I had a well setup D7 and now D8. I would flat whoop any stock D7 or equivalent to my D8 (head mod).

What you should really consider is this. Are you going to be looking for more power? Do you want a modded sled? Can you live with a mostly stock sled? If you can live with a stock sled the 700 is great. But you can't get a ton more power out of it w/o turbo or BB.

D8 are not hard to setup and they all don't blow up. I'm not trying to talk you into a D8, but this talk that they can't run with a D7 is BS.

I would have to agree with bugito on this one..a 7 without alot of mods wont run with a good running stock 8..i have 3 friends on D-7's. and it took ported twin-piped fuel controller D-7 to run equal on the hill to bone stock D-8 with slp single(both with gearing and good clutching)..

It also depends on how you ride. Most of the d8's that have burned down have been running a steady 30-50 mph on groomed trails. If this is you, The d7 may be a better options. Most d8's that NEVER see a groomed trail have few issues with the burn downs. Both the 7 and 8's are prone to be a victim of a bad voltage regulator and can take out the ecu with it. I would take an 8 over a 7 anyday. I never hold a part throttle setting in the riding we do. Good luck. You will love either sled.

My brother has a stock 2009 800 155" with a slp air horn and I can walk all over him with my setup. I am running carl's cycle helix, belly buster weights, slp air horn, hps can, 19:42 gears, venting and a Camoplast Challenger Extreme. If any of you don't believe me, I guess we'll have to settle with disagreement. Of course if his sled had similar improvements, I'm very sure it would be a better mountain machine than mine...unless you were talking about the reliability factor, then not a chance.

your brother can do some clutching to his(I started with carls setup )and make some impressive pickups to his sled..stock leaves alot to be desired....

I do not doubt that your "prep'd" d7 will out perform a box stock d8. That is not comparing apples to apples to me. Same can be said for most any sled. Good clutching and gearing is huge as is setting up the suspension for how and where you ride. It is amazing just how many people will ride a sled exactly as the dealer hands it to them. I guarrentee, if you setup a d8 as you have done to yours, the results would be different.

i really like all the input! Put it this way. i bought my 05 edge 700 151 brand new and just sold it with 1500 miles on it. thats how much i ride. i dont have tons of time or money and being that i am living in western wisconsin its expensive to find mountains. but heres the thing. i am sick of a couple guys in my group on their good running skidoo 800s that i can run with but i cant put up the high mark everytime. i dont want to deal with the tuning issues of a turbo or large mods like this but i do thing a pcv would be fun to mess with. i am sick of making a highmark. i wanna go over the top. so i was leaning to the 7 but i am headed to grand mesa next week with 4 poo 7s 1 2010 d8 and 1 skidoo 800. i will have to ride them all and see what i think.
