I was looking at this 89 650 indy on ebay. It looks like it might go super cheap and i need something to tinker with. The guy says it won't start unless you dump gas in it. It also won't run below 3,000. He said he has cleaned the carbs replaced the fuel line, filter and pump. I don't have a chance to go and look it, but i am wondering could the crank is out of phase? says it runs 120 psi on all cylinders. I dunno, I really don't want a money pit I just want something to mess with. My basic question is does anyone know something common that could be wrong?

Pilot jets plugged from sitting a long time.....Needs the carbs gone thur....They are a good sled, I had 2 over the years....

imagine that you need to dump gas in it to make it run? whats next, pull thumb leave to make it rev up? sorry dude i couldnt help myself. its 20yrs old leave it die!!!! and save your self the time and money.

Its a classic IMO. I'd go for it if it don't look too shabby.
I agree w/ Cle Elum, sounds like plugged pilots.

Clean the carbs, its a plugged jet or fuel line or possibly the guy has the choke all messed up. If you want, i have a 96 XLT 600 for $750 and the only thing it needs is a new secondary and a seat. The sled was wrecked and the insurance bought us a new hood, windshield, belly pan, engine, and seat. Everything was fine and dandy for 4 rides then the secondary disintegrated. Than it set there for 4 years and in that time, some one shot the windshield with a bb gun and we had a bear come through and he chewed up our seat. The sled looks great and has good graphics.

The sled has a 136x1.5 mountain track and it runs strong with good clutching.

The stock sled makes 80 Hp and a tone of torque. If you pipe it, new airbox, new carbs, head, lower gearing, and you would have a 110-120 hp rocket that would keep up with alot of new sleds on the trail. You can also pick up a used turbo for one of these sleds for $1000-$2000 and that would put you at 140-180 hp.

thanks

thanks i'm not looking to spend that much. I have an 01 800 rmk, pipes and all that stuff. I just need something to keep me busy. Thanks for all the responses.

I've got one in my back yard, give me $500 and its yours. Good sleds in their day.
