Hey guys, we will have our new carbon helmet at the Denver show, as well as 11 other shows across the country. They are in stock at your local 509 dealer starting this week and we'll be receiving new containers almost weekly through the end of October, so stock levels before the snow flies won't be an issue. Check with your favorite 509 dealer or on our website to get your hands on one.
There's alot of cool new helmet technology in the sled industry this year! Alot of options in every price point, which is awesome to see. The Kali Helmet foam technology in the MF helmet is definitely innovative!
There are so many variables to consider when comparing helmet price points, just one of many being the helmets shell construction. Helmet shells typically fall into three categories: Carbon Fiber, Fiberglass, Molded Polycarbonate. Carbon fiber being on the upper echelon of manufacturing costs. However with the added price tag, you get all the amazing properties found in carbon fiber. CF has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios in existence. Which lends it's self to be an extremely light weight, yet incredibly strong material. This is one of many reasons why its the material of choice across so many industries such as aerospace, automotive, etc.
Here is one general material strength comparison chart...
[MATERIAL] [STRENGTH] [DENSITY] [SPECIFIC STRENGTH] [BREAKING LENGTH]
[Aluminum] [600 MPa] [ 2.80 g/cm³] [214 kN·m/kg] [21.8km]
[Steel] [2000 MPa] [7.86 g/cm³] [254 kN·m/kg] [25.9km]
[Fiberglass] [3400 MPa] [2.60 g/cm³] [1307 kN·m/kg] [133km]
[Carbon Fiber] [4300 MPa] [1.75 g/cm³] [2457 kN·m/kg] [250km]
*Specific Strength: Is a materials strength (force per unit area at failure divided by its density.)
*Breaking length: The max length a vertical column of material that could suspend its own weight when supported only at the top.
As you can see carbon fiber has a specific strength that is 867% stronger than steel and 88% stronger than fiberglass.
The beauty of this industry is the companies that represent their products. No matter which snowmobile brand helmet you go with, you'll receive a good product backed by an even better company.
