40 truck pile up on the summit between Laramie and Cheyenne

anyone have suggestions for travel route to togwotee from cheyenne to avoid the area? comming from the east (michigan) heading down 80. thinking 80 to 25 north to (casper) 20-26, west to 26-287 to dubois then tog. will that be a decent route? any other suggestions? thanks in advance. ski

Really? looking for an alternate route? WTF! It 15-20 miles of wind and snow packed roads. When you finally make it to togwotee, head to Brecka Cliff up on Angle mountain, it will make the trip thur the pass well worth it.

why are you going down to 80? go across on 90 & you would avoid it all...

you still have to take I-80 to Laramie unless you shoot past Cheyenne AND TAKE OWL CANYON ROAD, OR TURN AFTER wHEATLAND AND TAKE SYBILLE CANYON, THE FIRST IS A BETTER OPTION IN THE WINTER!!!

Owl Canyon... just because it's better doesn't mean it's passable. lol! Was stuck up there a couple of times last winter trying to get to Cheyenne.

If you are going to Togwotee from the east and traveling on 80 when you get to Ogallala, Neb turn and take US 26 north. It cuts off some mileage and is a good road all the way until you pick up on I-25 north of Wheatland. Take it all the time in the big truck.

It isn't right, and it won't happen, but WyDOT should close it when wind gets above about 20 mph in the winter. I'll drive 100 miles around to avoid it.

LOL- it'd be closed all winter!

As it is, they are shutting down I80 so often that you can almost use a calendar to mark the days it *is* open. And now they've got that idiotic 65mph limit across elk. This is what happens when carriers are willing to put any warm body in the driver's seat and not properly train them. Ofcourse, some people just simply don't belong behind the steering wheel of anything.

Sherman is not that bad 98% of the time. But no doubt, when it is bad, the biggest danger is all those idiot truck drivers that don't know what they are doing. It would be nice if WYDOT wasn't so damn stingy with the sand, though!

Let me tie this entire thread together...

Last December, I was trying to get to my brother in laws graduation at UW...but first I had to go through Laramie to Cheyenne and down to Ft. Collins to pick up my sister in law and her family. the pass to cheyenne was horrible. people off the road left and right. we made it to cheyenne and headed down to ft collins. picked them up at the airport...and started heading back to Laramie. They closed the interstate at Wellington right before we got there. the two lane to laramie was closed as well. we were stranded.

spent the night in a brand new comfort inn off the overpass at wellington...woke up the next morning to the fire alarm going off...took the kids out to the Denali... only to find the drivers side rear window completely busted out and anything not bolted down on the inside of my vehicle is gone. dvd player. headphones. cd's. hats. gloves. sun glasses. ice scraper. a banana. a pear. my unopend sweetarts. and of course, my wallet.

i hate wellington. and that pass sucks.
