35's for my titan

i'm lifting my titan and going to put some 35's on it. i figured since this is a sled forum that i would ask you guys in here about mud tires and snowy conditions. how many of you guys run mud tires all year and what are you experiences? what tires are you running? did you have any sipping done to them?

thanks

not that this answers your question,

Most folks never re-gear after going to big tires. It can cause issues later, smoking the trans, poor performance towing , etc. Its like driving around in second gear all the time.

Just keep that it in mind

good luck

I had 37" Toyos and really liked them, but I've heard really good things about the Cooper STT and they're quite a bit lighter. The Toyo's will kill your mileage due to the weight(I think 35's are 80-85 lbs), but they'll last forever under a gasser and you'll never puncture on. Oh, and your truck is going to hate you if you don't re-gear.

yeah I would be pretty carefull with that stock tranny and rear-end with 35's. Titans are not a heavy duty truck. just something to think about.

mine is a 4x4 and i'm going with a 6" lift. i have talked to alot of the titan guys on titantalk and they all have had zero problems with out a re-gear. sure i'm going to loose power, but apparently since we have a 5 speed tranny the 3.73's is like having 4.10's. so we shall see, if it is a problem i will re-gear it later. i only tow a 2 place clam shell. guys are towing campers and boats and alot larger things over there with stock gearing. i think a nice light tire may be the way to go. the toyo mt's are great, but 85 lbs or so is a damn heavy tire. maybe i will go with a lighter at.

titan and heavy duty should never be put in the same sentence. as soon as its payed off (maybe someone will steal it before then) i'm going to get a 2500 chevy or ram. i'm just in the process of buying a house so i need to keep it for another 2 years. i will never buy anything nissan again. i'm just sick of the truck so i want to make it look how i want it to look.

Man thats crazy that you are having trouble with your Titan. Ive spoken to alot of the gas field guys who run them and they seem to think they hang in there better than anything else out there. Sure they arent a 2500 or 3500, but they are just as comparible if not better than any domestic 1500, and thats coming from an old DIE HARD Chevrolet fan. I dont really think you can say any 1500 truck is a TRUCK anymore, they are too domesticated. I really like mine, but I didnt buy it thinking it was going to be pulling something everyday all day long.

that makes no sense at all, first will still be higher with the bigger tires than before? But maybe new tech has left me in the dust:confused:

Cause I know when i went from 4:10 to 4:88 on my play truck it was worlds better and actually got a little better mpg.

trust me you'll take a big kick in the pants on the power with the bigger tires even with the 5 speed. i recently put a 6" lift and 35" on my 8.1L chev with the 5 speed allison and 4.10 gears and it made a very noticeable difference in power, especially bottom end, so i would bet it would be even worse on the smaller motor with 3.73s in your titan. when i can afford it i'm going to re-gear my 8.1 to 4.56s just to get what i lost back.

as for the mud tires i played that game once and won't ever use them again unless i have a pretty much strict off road vehicle. i had BFG m/ts on my old truck and they sucked in anything other than deep snow or mud. if it snowed just enough to turn the roads white i had a hell of a time keeping it straight even in 4x4. other than that mud tires tend to wear out alot faster than all terrains. i know lots of people swear by the toyo's but the price and past history with mud tires will keep me from buying them. this is just my experience and opinion so take it FWIW.

hulk, my buddy had an 05 and he had the same exact issues. anything like pre 07 08 is no good.

i'm no expert on gearing i'm just going on what i read on the titantalk forum. toyos are nice but they are real heavy, like 10-20 lbs more than alot of tires.

what at's would you guys recommend?

I have Titan with a leveling kit and airbags, I run toyo MT33s and it does just fine towing, if your titan has the big tow package, which has a trans temp guage, the big mirrors, and the tow package from the dealer, it will have 4.10 gears. 4.10s with 33s do just fine but with 35s I would do 4.88s. I keep an eye on my tranny temp all the time and it has not changed much with the bigger tires. As far as problems I have not had any serious problems with my Titan, the fuel guage acts up sometimes and the window regulator broke, but nothing serious, I have driven it to the around the country and back to Alaska in the middle of the winter a few times and have never worried about a thing. My truck is all paid for, and I intend on keeping it a very long time.

Mine is an 06 and no problems. I am a DIE hard Chevrolet fan, always have been but I dont care for a single thing they are doing now days. The last Chevy truck I thought was a GOOD truck was 1998. You can say what you want but Ive seen more problems ESPECIALLY electrical problems out of all the domestic trucks Chevy, Ford, and Dodge.

Thats why I have a 1997 Z71, and my 06 Titan.

maybe its just a sh!t luck for both of us, but they have been no good to either of us. its in the ship now as they are trying to figure out for the 6th time why my heat is all screwed up.

i have the big tow package.

I RUN TOYO OPEN COUNTRY MTs ON MY H2 HUMMER AND MY F150 I USE IN THE OILFIELD. I HAVE 24,000 MILES ON THE TIRES ON MY F150 AND THEY HAVE MORE THAN HALF TREAD LEFT. THEY WERE GREAT ALL LAST WINTER IN THE SNOW IN NORTH DAKOTA WITH NO SIPING. MAKE SURE YOU ROTATE THE EVERY 5000-6000 THOUSAND AND THEY LAST GREAT. BAD *** TIRES BUT THEY ARE PRICEY. JUST MY $.02

If the foreign trucks were that great we'd have entire fleets of them.

Until I start seeing oil companies, service companies, etc buying entire fleets of Toyota or Nissans, I'm sticking with Ford or GM.

I have 33's on my 07 ranger..... The truck has 4.10 gears and a 5 speed manual trans and it is fine. The thing could easily handle 35's as is. Your titan will be fine with the big tires. I mean doesnt it have like a 32-33 stock haha no problems the toyo M/T's are a great tire but there really heavy. I was gunna get those but the guy at big O said to go with the cooper stt for the lighter design and I love them:beer; The tires that is....

dude i worked for les schwab for 5 years and we had the bronco motors account, over that time i lifted about 75 titans and about 50% of them had problems after lift. alot of them broke diffs, alot of rack and pinion leaks and issues, popping was very common even after multiple retorques. got to the point were we started turning them away. but on the other hand, they do hae alot of power and come stock with 33" tire so going to a 35 isnt that bad for power and gearing because it isnt a big jump. we used fabtech lifts about 98% of the time. thats what i would use. i installed a few procomps and they were easier to install and had to cut less but had WAY more problems down the road. and if your gont to get rid of it down the road, why lift it? why spend 4k on wheels, tires, lift when it wont improve resale value?

35x12.5x15(or whatever rim size you want) Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radial. best tire I've ridden on in my buddies F-150 with a 6". So smooth on the road considering how much stupid grip they have off road. Quietest big nasty off road tire I've seen to date.

alot of those problems that you refered to happen regardless of whether you lift these trucks. i have had both differentials replaced. i plan on selling it to a high school kid when i'm all done, they love the cheap lifted trucks.
