2871 turbo ?

That made no sense unless you just wanted to tell us about it.

BD only runs 2860's from what I know???

I bought a used kit and was told it was a 2871. I was thinking about having it gone through but was told if it is a ball bearing turbo there is nothing they can do.

I have a garett 2871 from a boondockers pg kit. is it a ball bearing or floating bearing?

You can get them in either. If its really from a BD kit then it's a ball bearing. They do you think it needs to be 'gone through'?

I have never heard of BD kits with 2871's, but who knows.
Call Garret and ask, they should be able to tell you.

All GT2871's are ball bearing turbos. No need to call the manufacturer. Doesn't matter who made the kit, if it's a Garrett 2871 it's a ball bearing turbo.

If you look at the data plate in the turbo it will have a letter after the numbers. The letters tell you what kind of turbo it is. The GT is the series, could be GT or T. If its a GT then the following applies. The 28 is the Turbine diameter in mm, the 71 is compressor wheel diameter in mm, the R = Roller Bearing aka "ball bearing" and if it has an S it means it is a single passage bypass.

If your turbo had a Z after the numbers then it would be a journal/thrust bearing

You can get them from any Garrett dealer, (Internet, turbo kit builder, etc.) depending on your relationship with the dealer, $500ish to $750ish. It's a 10 to 15 minute install if you're careful. You can also buy rebuilt center sections a little cheaper.

Where would I find one of these "rebuilt center sections" you describe, I've been hunting everywhere and am simply resorting to buy a new unit for 1200 the cheapest center section I found shipped to canada was $800. I was told $1100 to re-build mine with 1yr warranty (alamo turbo's calgary)

ATP Turbo does the Ball Bearing Exchange Program through Garrett. About $500 for a new exchanged center section.

atpturbo.com

Just give them a call.
