-25°f! Damages found today!

constant varied throttle.....never more than 5 seconds in any set throttle position. always keeps you out of trouble. -10 to 5 degrees all day at the ears today.

Scary. I'm going to take this advice as my sled never feels quit right in those temps. Plus it sucks to ride when its that cold anyway. Started up our ski doo tundra extreme when it was -16 yesterday and both the primary and secondary were frozen stiff. Took about 15 minutes just to get it to move forward. How many miles did you have on the top end?

It's kinda weird that is happening? It's definitely colder in AK and people ride there sled all over the place to get around.

They have their sleds set up for the colder temps, I imagine that the sleds don't run as well as they should once the weather warms up

PJ:

Your sled is carbed? :face-icon-small-sho

.

Yes.

Oh no, my record puts yours technicians to shame, but I do ride a lot and do my own wrenching. What's your excuse? and I haven't burnt down since may of 08..

Huh?

It wasn't so much a burn down as a minor cold seizure that caused the ring to clip my intake port. I will be jetting for 0°f and going from there. I don't do my own wrenching on the XP as it is still under warranty.

Spoke to the dealer today. He said that the inspector looked at the scraped cyliinder and then went back to Denver to fill out paper work. Dealer said everything looked and sounded ok. Why they don't carry a laptop with a v-card and do it onsite boggles my mind. Seems tremendously inefficient. If they had done it that way, the dealer would already be putting my sled back together.

Not sure about the '09 XP, but my REV has a valve you can turn to recirculate some warm air back into the carbs for ultra-cold days. I've never used it as I've never rode in that low of temps (outside of growing up in WI), but I may read up on it now in case the need arises. Do XPs (carb'd) have that same valve on the carbs?

REV does have a valve but to my knowledge it doesn't recirculate AIR, it recirculates warm/hot coolant through the carbs.

That is true. It is used to warm up the carbs and keep them from freezing. In my experience tho, once warmed up and not frozen, the sled runs poorly. Not meant to be used all day

Depends on the day. Temps, snow conditions, and humidity can all cause carbs to freeze.

On cold days we have seen the lead sled not have any issues, but sleds behind it have snow dust hit the pipe, turn to steam and then turn back to ice when that steam hits the carbs.

I always turned my carb heaters on when it was below 10 degrees, or at least cracke the valve open. On my current sled they are on all the time running through the throttle bodies (Apex).

We rode New Years in temps 10-15 below (humidity was 70-80%). My brother in law's both ran the carb heaters on their Doos (one rev and the other an XP). No issues and the sleds all ran great.

As was said - you don't hafta run them wide open. You can open partially.

I have only used mine once at -30*. I have not had NEAR the freezing issues as I did with the round slides. However under hood air draw was an issue on the old F2000 chassis. The Zx doesn't really have much issue with that. No idea of newer machines....

Being a long time rider and engine builder I NEVER run my carbed sleds anywhere near lean just for that reason. The 1 or 2 hp you get from running near lean is not worth it to me.

Never thought it was lean. Every time I pulled the plugs or popped off the head, things looked fine. It will get fattened up as sonn as I get it back.

My cluster gauge went fubar today for no reason....spent a blue bird powder day in the lot kicking the sled. It was awesome.....met another guy who melted down..chilled and drank adult beverages watching sled vids in the lot all day.
LMAO!!! it sucks but at least you made the best of it!

Odd cylinder scoring when running odd temps (usually hot temps but can be when cold) usually means oil failure. Sure you can run almost anything if you do not stress your engine, but if you run it at its limits via temps you need a really good oil. Try to pick one with zinc in it (zinc aids when an engine might momentarily starve for oil).

Ok, all you shade tree mechanics come on and flame me.....:loco:
