2015 YAMAHA VIPER MTX Preview

Prairie, those numbers are correct and weighed on a digital certified scale accurate to within a pound to 5k lbs. not all sleds were weighed topped off but I can verify the 2014 and 2015 yamaha were weighed full and ready to ride. It was done in my shop by me and verified by two or three others on every sled. Whether you choose to believe the weights is up to you but I know for a fact these weights are accurate along with every individual that brought their sleds to me. It was fun to see the differences between all the makes and models and individual setups, each varied but always fun to see what they actually weigh.

I just find it hard to believe the variance in weights from what you saw to what I saw. I can't say for certain when the scale we used was calibrated last but I can only assume that it is corrected as it is a scale used by a heli maintenance company.........don't think those guys mess around with fudging numbers lol. Do you have any idea what was changed from 2014-2015 to get so much difference in weight??
 
Prairie Dog, The scale BOOSTD is using actually belongs to me and it's accurate to within one pound like he stated. You are only guessing the "accumulated snow weight" so I would suggest weighing your sled again without any snow on it. Maybe there's some weight difference in the turbo kits.
 
So we got out Saturday in some really good snow for some "REAL" testing. I took a guy who is a really good rider and we went to the trees. This is the one spot that the 4 stroke struggles more than any other. I don't just mean we could see trees, I mean you had a tree well on your left or right (or both) about 99.9% of the time. We went up and down through the trees in very tight deep conditions. Let's just say that this Viper may just be my day to day donkey next season. Right now I would take my M8000 with the 909 kit over just about anything, but the smooth power of the triple is hard to deny.

I put some real skis on her (SLP Powder Pros) and stiffened up my rear shock and softened my front shocks and let it go and I was really impressed. I am still running around 7 to 8 lbs of boost and that seems like it gets the job done just fine.

I still need to get this sled to a scale so I can give the weight report, but it feels like it is 30lbs heavier than the M8000 and about 100lbs lighter than the M1100T, or M9000.

I have not gauged the fuel consumption, but it is pretty miserly on the gas. I think for most rides I will be fine with just the stock tank.

I still have a few quirks to iron out on this sled which will be addressed with fueling solutions, suspension upgrades, and some clutching, but so far so good. Oh, and I STILL don't get tired of opening that clutch cover and putting bare hands on the clutches!!!!
 
Couple questions. You said that the sled has Cat ecu and electronics. So the Yamaha version has this? What about clutches? Cat runs Cat clutches and Yamaha runs Yamaha? I really wish Cat would offer the 162 next year cause I love my dealer and Yamaha is non existent as far as a dealer.
 
The electronics, ecu, fuel injection system etc is Cat. The Yamaha has Yamaha clutches, a heavier duty jackshaft and better chain and sprockets. I understand that the M7000 will have the better jackshaft and chaincase internals for 2015. I was torn to do a Cat or a Yamaha, but the Yamaha clutches are worth $1000 to me. Belts can be purchased at most shops for $69 to $79 each and they are stout, so I decided to go with the Yamaha on this project. Also, the fact that you can buy a turbo kit for $2000 under retail AND maintain the factory warranty is a no brainer.

LMFAO. i like doing that. my M800 gets to hot to do that. on a good note though makes some awesome burritos after awhile. haha. can we please get some weight on how much it is compared to the 1100T. obviously turbo to turbo.
 
Weighed my Viper last week....mcx 270kit, stretched to 162x2.5 and narrowed to 38" stance......full of fuel 666lbs with about 5-10lbs of snow in skid and a arms. Two yrs ago weighed my m1100t sno pro bone stock full of fuel and it was 675lbs with no snow on it. Viper feels way lighter moving it around and riding it. Other guys on here have weighed Vipers full of fuel and they were around 615lbs I believe.
 
In the latest edition of SnowTech magazine,

I assume they are comparing the Viper to the Nytro, correct?

yes rode a 174 boost it pro & a 174 boost it viper on the weekend in 2+feet of wet snow & was very supprized how close they felt in weight.i actually thought the viper pulled over easier & held it line just as good.
 
I agree. The Viper has the engine back and up and it tips into the sidehill really nice. As always the deeper the snow the better the four strokes feel, but this one is really good in firmer snow as well compared to past offerings.

they did most everything ready to ride but the yamy stuff, were they empty of fuel half tank ? why bother if you are not going to fill them up and do apples to apples... julio
 
Sorry, appears as though I copied the post prior to the 2015 being weighed. The 2015 with MPI turbo was weighed RTR at 614 lbs. it was done at a Yami dealer so some sleds that came in were weighed as they were because they were there. Everyone who partook agreed that the ones not RTR were kind of a waste of time, but there is a lot of good data there and the ones non RTR were not hidden to try falsify weights.
