>>>>> 2015 Yamaha Mountain Sleds: VIDEO and PHOTOS, (JUST RELEASED)

My guess is Yamaha had to stay with the 130hp motor without factory boost to please Cat. Otherwise it would be directly competing with Cat's 1100T. In my opinion, if Yamaha would have come out with a 160hp N/A Viper, there wouldn't be as much for people to complain about. They would have followed through with their promise of new engines. If I were in charge at Yamaha, I would have hit the market with something big the first year of their five year plan and taken baby steps the next four. When the other three sled makers are making huge strides in the industry, Yamaha needs to provide something better to truly compete. Again, I love Yamha quality, but they need to ditch the mindset that it has to be bullet proof. We all know we're R&D for the sled makers. But Yamaha needs to throw us more of a bone than what they did.

Now with that said, people need to take a deep breath and respect other people opinion when it comes to these forums. Some people act like you just told them their baby is ugly. It's not the case. There is just some disappointed customers out there (me being one of them) because I was ready to order a new Yamaha (until I saw what they brought to the table)

So let me get this straight. Yamaha bought into the heaviest, worst handling mtn chassis in years and added a heavy 4-stroke motor to it, and consumers are supposed to be excited about it? Cat already makes an underpowered, overwieght 1100 Proclimb and a well powered, overwieght turbo version. How do they expect to sell any of these? Cat can't hardly sell them and Yamaha is synonomous with overwieght mtn sleds.

Best of luck with that plan guys. Hopefully the "better than Cat" graphics will do it... LOL

correct me if i am wrong. but where are you getting the heaviest and worst handling sled.

That's exactly what the Apex is...

No its not, the apex motor in use now is a highly refined 1998 version of the R1. R1 engines were totally redesigned in 2004 (172 hp without ram air) and in 2007-08 changed to a 16 valve head vs the standard 20 valve they used for ever, then again in 2009 or 2010 to the crossplane. Out of all those the crossplane would fit a sled application the best,......but its by far the heaviest with its oddball crank and counterbalance shaft. The bikes from 04 to the current crossplane generation gained 50 lbs.

I know it is heavier but can you imagine hearing a turbo'd cross plane yammi 4 cylinder out on the snow.....that would be the best sounding sled period. I have a friend that bought an new R1 and put an aftermarket exhaust on that bike and it sounds awesome, runs even better. Is the crossplane engine really going to be 50lbs heavier? Not doubting just curious as this engine interest's me.

The whole bike is over 50 lbs heavier, and some of that is motor. If you look at just the crank design and required counter balance shaft you can see their is a lot of extra weight vs the "screamer" designed internals. They sure do have their own sound.

Stuff a 174 under it, put an Impulse Standalone kit in it, and I think you have a winner! Sure would be cool if I could throw a leg over something like this in the next few weeks!:face-icon-small-win

Ya I don't know why people can never be happy!! I'm not a big cat fan at all but I think the new sleds are awesome. I think riding Yamaha your always the butt of the jokes but for some reason you can ride and do everything that everyone does on there super awesome BA god sent two strokes!!! If burandt rode Yamaha then this new sled would be the BEST and everyone would have one! Look at Chris brown he rips on his Nytro and does everything that everyone else does on a two stroke.

That is a Yamaha determination, NOT a MPI design limitation.
The kit can absolutely be used at lower elevations.
There are hundreds of them in use back east on low elevation Vipers right now.

So just contact MPI before ordering to make sure it can be made safe at sea level?

I actually really like the 153 SE. We have a culture of folks here in MI who ride mountain sleds off trail in the deep snow here in MI. Then travel west once or twice a year. If I am used to the ProRMK I wonder how much heavier this thing will feel? Will it carve as easy. My guess is no but the reliability factor has to be really good. I think Yamaha has some demo rides this weekend at the dealer near our cabin. I am going to slide on down there today and see if I can at least tryout a viper XT-X. I doubt they will have any mountain versions here in MI.

I'm surprised how die hard and hopeful the Yamaha guys are on here. I mean did you really think they were going to even do more than release these new mountain sleds this year on the cat platform? I mean look at Yamahas history the last 8 years. I would say even though it is not earth shattering or setting a new standard this still may be the first serious 4 stroke mountain sled to ever be released. Just need to boost the power now.

well its a step in the right direction, but I will say the orange and blue is about the worst colors ive ever seen on anything....and that from a company that gave us the most bad a$$ black and yellow and red/white paint on bikes there ever was. Ive always had yammi bikes and was really expecting to see a FACTORY turbo around 200 hp. Or at the very least the new 3 cylinder engine from the bikes at around 165+ n/a. As far as the weight goes, well its a 4 stroke. They need to really start to understand that 130 hp is a joke in a heavier sled, its all about hp per pound.
So again ill keep riding my 2 stroke pro, even if I have to put pistons in it every 1500 miles lol

now stick that motor in a sled (tz750)

They have made some good color choices in the past and while I agree the orange and blue is pretty interesting nothing is worse than the purple and yellow banshees that they made:)

The Blue and White and Red/Black sure looks good though.

Just another let down from yamaha I bled yamaha for 10 years got tired of waiting switched to a better brand for my riding. The new tech coming to the sleds a three year old sled will be behind. I don't want my motor to last 10000 miles. I want power to weight ratio in a na sled. With the turbos coming on in two strokes yamaha has missed the boat with the four stroke. In 2007 we should have had a turbo factory four stroke. Getting with cat is easy way out and still say we sell snowmobiles.

this coming from a guy that rides the most under powered two stroke you can buy right now! With the right stuff done to the 4 stroke motor your pushing 280 HP plus! I would like to see a two stroke do that and ride a least a season!

Yamaha Nytro= 1049cc 130hp
2006 yamaha R1-998cc 180HP

Seems to me Yamaha has the technology, they have already proven the power they can get out of small displacement 4 strokes with their street bikes. Not sure if its a EPA deal or if the high HP engines are not as reliable in sled applications?

Motorcycles don't run wide open under the same load and cooling conditions as sleds. A two minute pull on a climb is not out of the question for a sled - that ain't gonna happen on a big sportbike, or not very often except for some suicidal guy on YouTube. Same as inboards - they don't get the ponies that a similar car motor does because a boat can run for miles at wide open throttle while that just doesn't happen with a car.
