2015 WR450 Starting Woes

I have a 2015 WR450 with a 2017 ST kit on it. I have a thermobob and all the other mods and it runs great but is a nightmare to start, both cold and hot. Does anyone who is running a 12-15 WR have similar problems or a solution?

Thanks in advance!

John

It's a pretty common problem until the new engine .. I know the local shop has adjusted something in the throttle body to help but it always seem hit or miss with who I ride with... There are 3 of them.

As far as kicking it should be fine if you you add a richer map... Deleting the EPA stuff helps also.

I was having a really hard time starting my 2013 until I got the gytr programmer and found that my idle was set too low. Adjusted that and then the only time I had a problem was if I drove with it in the back of the truck on cold days without covering up the radiators and then used the e-start. Started covering up the radiators while driving and used the kick for the first start on cold days and had no more issues.

2,000 sounds about right. Mine had got set down to like 1300 somehow, probably when I was riding in the summer up over 6,000 feet, so it would run but didn't want to start. If you know your idle, I assume you have the programmer. Have you tried any different maps?

X2 on the Thumper Talk thread. I learned a lot about my '15 WR over there. The biggest improvement you can make is to get the YZ ECU. Plug and play. My bike is still a little stubborn after sitting a few days in the cold shop, but starts every time with the button. I have yet to get the tuner to fine tune the EFI and ignition mapping, but Thumper Talk has a whole thread full of different maps that guys have field tested with results that should be useful once I get to that point.

I did all of the EPA removals, added a thermo-bob, fabricated an engine jacket for the left side of the motor, and placed insulation between the skid plate and cases. Loving this set up with my '17 Moto-Trax Enduro so far.

Have fun!!

I've been reading all the thumper talk data. I do have the programmable ECU and tried a number of maps. I'm thinking about returning it all to stock settings and going with that.
