The Jeep diesels net better power and economy as do the VW Jettas that are diesels. And you can actually drive them with no worries of lack of power.
The jeep can get close to 30 and the Jetta gets over 50. So why not a 1/2 ton? And if you delete that Emission crap you can get back to over 20. And IMO, 18 MPG ain't bad for a full size pickup. You won't see a 3/4 ton gasser getting that.
This is a concept that several people seem to be having a hard time grasping. It's a smaller frame, lower to the ground, lighter-duty vehicle. So how can you speculate that its smaller displacement engine won't be able to achieve better MPGs than the 6.7s and the 6.6 in the large frame heavy-duty trucks?
The whole idea behind small diesels in lighter vehicles is for mileage and keeping some power around when you need it. Like Chrysler would really pull the trigger on a project like this if it wasn't gonna be more economical and fulfill the need of truck owners not looking to purchase the rougher-riding 3/4 & up machines. I'm sure this new pickup will offer half-ton owners a chance at a better cruising speed mileage and more linear power when they hook on to their boat or sled trailer.
