2014 Pro - Durability Enhancements

Just finished the paperwork up on my new 14 800 Pro RMK 155 last night and should be picking it up on Saturday. This is my first Pro-Ride chasis (last sled was a bulletproof 09 700 RMK 155), so I have been doing a lot of research on here. Obviously every sled has its weaknesses and I am making a list of the ones for the Pro. I will not have a lot of time to work on the sled before this season, so I am looking for a prioritized list of enhancements that I should add to increase durability. The performance mods will come later, I just want to address the function and durability items first. To provide some details, I am a big guy (6'2" and 245lbs). I ride a combination of MN ditches (when we actually get snow) and out west (primarily the Big Horns).

I have already ordered an OFT steering block and tether. I am planning a Skinz float plate and belt guard and debating on which bumpers to go with. Any other suggestions on what items and in what order I should address on the 14 would be greatly appreciated (tunnel braces, "big boy" springs, etc.)

Thank you for your help!

If you can make a change to what sled you pick up on sat. I would buy an Assault if I were you. I'm from the range and come back and ride once a year and I grow up riding the big horns. So I think I kinda know what you like to do on a sled and an assault would fit you a lot better then a pro. I think you would like the assault track better also then the rmk track. The shocks that come on an assault will more then take care of your weight too. I had about 1000 miles on pro rmks last winter and went with the assault and I could not be more happy with my sled.

RETRO ASSAULT: Thank you for the advice, but I am definitely sticking with the RMK. Even though I live in the flatland, I am a mountain rider at heart. I do not ride trails even around here. Pretty well take road ditches to the first drainage ditch to find where the powder blew into. I have ridden a few Assaults, the RMK is definitely my kind of sled. I am actually having a hard time talking myself out of jumping right to a 3" track on this sled.

wjl: Thank you, I had read these articles but am unsure on which direction to go with a kit. Definitely leaning towards the Fastrax setup.

Just a thought you may want to send your stock shocks out to get re-valved to your riding style and weight. Polaris stock set-up is for "light persons"
If I recall there are some good shops that do shock rebuilds in MN.

Never ending ................ but ride and have fun & pray for snow.

At least one Polaris wheel kit.

I'm assuming you mean boggies? I'm not really concerned about this. I pulled the boggies off of my 09 RMK 155 on day one. Ran scratchers religiously and am still on my original HyFax. I appreciate the suggestion though!

I ordered the Skinz Float Plate, Bash Guard, and front Bumper tonight. Tried ordering the Fastrax Pro-tector tunnel kit, but website lists them as out of stock. Sent an email to check availability.

As for the rear bumper I am torn yet. So far I have found the Standard Skinz and Skinz Dan Adams versions (I think I prefer this one). Are there other rear bumpers which people really like?

I recommend ordering a spring package. Either the zbroz or the raptor. I went with the raptor because of being a triple rate, they offer a firm spring kit, and the price was reasonable. Rear bumper, I went with the Happy face Performance rear bumper.

They make two lengths, standard and long. I went with the long since I have the 163" track. i will get some pics of it mounted when I get my sled all back together from the powder coater.

Turn up the oil pump, I recommend powder coating the running boards to get optimum performance and minimize ice/snow buildup on the raw aluminum. Also a tunnel wrap helps minimize build up of snow too. Other than that, I say ride it and have fun!

The glued a-arms are not the strongest.

I dont know if the new quickdrive improvment will make it stronger, but tightning the track to polaris spec's seemed to save the belt (so far)

Take the advice that was given early on, get the assault. I ride only mountains and will be getting the assault with my next purchase. Chain drive, no driveshaft issues, much better suspension, and you can get the powder track for it. I chase my buddy through some nasty terrain trying to keep up with him and he's on a '13 assault.

I will look into turning up the oiler when it shows up. Can't be too careful.

I will definitely be ordering a spring kit for the sled. Had one on the last sled and what a difference in the ride. Does anyone have any idea of what the normal turn around time is on getting shocks re-valved.? I'm concerned about leaving the sled in pieces this close to the season. May just do the spring kit this year and revalve next year.

wjl - Thanks for the rear bumper thread!

I find it odd that so many people dislike the assault. I just don't feel like the wider front end makes it any harder to side hill and all the plusses that the assault offers over a pro. Makes it an easy chose for me. Talking to a # of guys in the last two years about the assault, (all non owners) disliked the assault but could never give a real reason why. But each to their own. Not trying to talk you into an assault just seems if you need all these things that an asssault has and your a big guy. throwing an assault around seems like it would be easy for you and you would save a lot of time and $ in up grades. But if you do like the pro so much more then the assault, maybe you should look into a 36 inch wide front end kit.
