2014 mountain sled sales (skidoo buying market share)

I am in the market for a new sled and find it hard to decide on what new sled to buy. Honestly i would buy the summit if there was a dealer in my area, because of the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. I was first lookin at the m8000 and still want one, but the price is higher and the warranty that come with it is a joke (2nd year engine only). Polaris is cheaper with a 2nd year powertrain warranty. It is more appealing, but still not close to a 3 year bumper to bumper. I know a few guys that bought skidoo even with the dealer a 3 hour trip (one way) away because the snowcheck was a 4 year bumper to bumper. These guys where looking hard at the Cat as well, but were swayed to Skidoo by the warranty and price. To Make it short, do you think that skidoo is buying the top mountain sales to beat out the Rmk? If the other manufactures had the sense to offer such warranties (which we all want) would the sales figures between the 3 companies be alot closer.

It was a classic movie that made a point about relying on a guarantee.... It went something like:

Tommy: Let's think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I'm listening.
Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of ****. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
Ted Nelson, Customer: [pause] Okay, I'll buy from you.

As ridiculous and wonderful as that exchange is it actually does provide a valid point. What are you really buying. A reliable product or just a reliable warranty? Hmmmm........

Love the quote, except that the ski doo is proving the most reliable thing on the snow short of a Yamaha. Would Ski Doo really offer a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty if it thought it was going to have to use it? No, they build a reliable product and are counting on the customers not needing to use the warranty. That said the bumper to bumper thing I'm sure is a joke because most of the stuff other than the powertrain will be deemed a wear item.

Hopefully the 4 year warranty from doo doesn't turn into the whole bumper to bumper warranty disaster that the poo faithful encountered a few years ago. Engine warranty claims were being denied for every reason in the book. Just my .02.

:argue:

All the new sleds are great.....not a bad one in the bunch.

Since 93 we have owned 3 Yamaha, 4 Ski Doo, 2 Polaris, 7 Arctic Cat sleds and the improvements in the technology and the dependability just keep getting better.

Go for the sled you get the best support for in your area. They are snowmobile after all and will be support.

Except they have quietly recalled pistons every year...

Except they have quietly recalled pistons every year...

now that isn't quite true is it...???...they have recalled these past two years for pistons of previous years but not of recent years pistons..

new recalls for older models, isn't that why its confused into every year..??> am I wrong or am I right..??

Yeah I think your right. Recall every year doesn't mean every model year. If the pattern holds true the 13s should be recalled this summer... But I don't really know, I'm just talking out my azz like a politician:face-icon-small-win

All the xm's I rode with last year are at the 1 belt per 100 mile mark. The demo I had roached 3 belt in 2 weeks. Great engine in the doos but hate the chassis, same crap since 2008. I have a mountain of broken S and E modules.

Not that it pertains to current sales but Poo offered a 4 yr warranty on snow checks or $600 P&A . I bought an 800 so it wasn't much of a decision for me! :face-icon-small-hap

Always been a catpoo guy. Wouldnt give a Rev or xp a 2nd look unless I was looking for a trail burner.
But after riding a XM this year, they finally got the handling right. Bone stock both of them were clutched right and. Couldn't tell the difference between the 13 with 1200 mi on it and the brand new one bedsides bngs.
Granted these sleds have/had an easy life but I liked them. Which is way more than I can say for the 2 previous generation Doos.

So I'd say they are earning market share.
Still like my 12 Pro but even at 450 mi getting plenty of extra oil since new, I know I'm riding a time bomb. Vibrates so much at idle, makes my mod M1000 feel smooth. The chassis and clutching is perfect though. Imo

4 of 5 guys I ride with had xms burn up last year. The oil pump failed on all f them. 2 were not warrantied because of cans. I have other friends with turboed two stroke cats who have had chain cases warrantied no questions asked. Your warranty doesn't do much good if they look for any reason to void it

Literally exactly the same results I've seen in my group. 2 2012 xp's and 1 2013 xm. 5 or 6 s modules and 2 e modules in 2 years. And a pile of belts.

I've had no issues with my '12 or '13 X's... EXCEPT 1 broken set of bars that the warranty covered. No questions asked. Maybe it's your dealerships are not taking care of you when they bill for the warranty. it's not like BRP sends out a rep to inspect the parts or see if you've put a can on the sled. I also ride with Pro RMK guys that have chewed threw more belts, had the drive shaft come undone (his got covered). So it's not 1 brand having issues or about a warranty more than the other, I think it's about your dealership. Get to know the guys working on your machines, ride with them if you can, stop in and drop off some bribes.. I mean.. ahh... snacks.. after all, no one likes to just see someone when they need something then have to hear them complain about how long it's going to take to repair. Stop in to buy an $8 washer that you could have gotten at home depot for $0.30 just to be a little friendly. I think it goes a long way, everywhere.

If the only time your dealer sees you is when you`re looking for warranties... chances are you`ll be put to the bottom of the list!
