2014 Assault bogging, your thoughts on it?

So I picked up a new sled this fall. I was running 91 octane with ethanol for the first 175 miles as it was all I could get my hands on, the deal set the sled for 91 w/ ethanol fuel. There was two times that I hit the throttle and it reved up and then just powered out, the engine warning light began blinking and it gave the DET warning on the MFD. I'm unsure if that was in fact detonation happening, as the manual says that also could indicate the sled hitting the rev limiter. There were also a couple of times that I would be coming in slow and then open it wide and it would just simply bog without even beginning to rev up. It's entirely possible that it is hitting the rev limiter since a couple times I've looked down and seen the tac at 8500. Although, the times that it's done that I've been in deeper snow so it should be working the engine and holding the revs down.

On Saturday I finally had a chance to go pick up some 100LL and blended that 1:2 with 91 ethanol free. So the octane should balance out between 94 and 94 2/3 depending on the exact octane of the AV fuel. I blended AV gas in to bring the octane up in case the problem was in fact detonation. After draining the fuel tank and refilling it with the higher octane ethanol free blend I switched the sled to the 91-non ethanol setting. It ran so much stronger with the changes, I never once had the DET warning, but there were many times I would break the throttle wide open and it would have nothing. If I approached full throttle more slowly it would get there and run no problem. I should mention my riding altitude has been 2200-2500 feet.

I guess my big question with this thread is, does it sound like my problems are with my fuel, and am I doing things right with blending, or should I just run 91 octane without ethanol? Does it pay to bring up my octane level, but not as high as I have?

Thanks for your input!

I think you need to throw more weight at it. Did your dealer set it up to run at 2000 feet or is it setup as a mountain sled for more like 8000?

Generally a stock sled is not benefiting from higher octane fuel. it may be different down low but at elevation a sled will barely run on high octane if its setup for 91.

I've definitely wondered if it's a clutching issue as well. The dealer said that all of the sleds they brought in were clutched for the altitude around town. At the same time though, I was talking with the dealers mechanic and I asked him straight up how the factory clutching was on the 14's and he said that they're finally getting it right, so I would take that to mean that they come from the factory clutched for 5000+ feet.

As far as the fuel, the sticker at the gas cap says 91+ requirement, but on the left side panel is says straight 91. I'm thinking I'll blend premium with AV 9:1 next time. Just give it a nice step up to 92.

last season my pro rmk 13, started to get DET every now and then, took it too dealer and they found a fuel line that was bent or something, fixed it and never had any DET after. Felt stronger aswell.

Probably, you shouldn't be hitting 8500. You may also be experiencing the classic CFI punch bog, at least on the 11/12s, which could also be TPS, injectors, fuel filter, etc., among the culprits. Add weight, and take it from there. Good luck. Assuming this is a new 14 (you implied that it was), if it's used, a new fuel filter would also be in order with more primary weight. What weights do they have in it, 64's? Way too light for ~2500ft on a stocker.

FYI, overy time, you are not going to find more performance with a 100LL blend with the stock head, you'll actually leave some on the table. You may be completely aware of this and was trying to work around the past fuel situation. Injectors don't care for lead, either, over extended periods of time. Run good 91 non-ethanol, no lead, with the stock head, especially at elevation, for optimum F/A ratios.

good too know it boggs too light of weight, prob does on the stand then too? sooooo i have to test my sled on the snow then....

If you experience the bog coming into the throttle, then look at the TPS and set the gap. If it is bogging at peak rpm, then you are over revving.

This is the same problem I was having towards the end of the season. I took it to the dealer and they adjusted the TPS and never had a problem since.

What? 175 miles. It is still 70 degrees here. I'm a little jealous!

Haha yeah, we've had it down to around -5 degrees F here. We got dumped on with snow on the night of the 2nd, and the 175 miles has since become 230 miles!

I'll look into the current clutch setup tonight, I think that the 64's are most likely, if that's what the manufacturer did standard then that's what it will probably have. I also came to the same conclusion as your advice about the fuel. As soon as I drain my slip tank I'll just stick to 91-non ethanol, I don't know if it is lead free though. There's only one place around that sells non-eth; Shell with their 91 V-Power. Anywhere else is 1 1/2+ hours away. If I were to upgrade the heads to the Power Addiction Racing kit would it pay to blend up to say a 92 octane level?

Had the same thing happen on my 2014 assault (hit the throttle and it reved up and then just powered out, the engine warning light began blinking and it gave the DET warning on the MFD),but did not experience the bog issue you had.Brought sled to dealer Polaris suggested replacing the fuel pump.Rode sled today with new pump installed 20 miles and did not fault once planning on a few more rides before iam convinced its fixed.
Was running 91 non ethanol fuel with sled set to 91 non ethanol, before and after pump replacement. Will report if problem returns.

I'm glad to hear that someone else has had the same problem and it's not just something I'm doing wrong! I've brought the odometer up to 280 miles and I haven't had issues any more. I'm definitely not convinced the problem is gone so I'm still going to be cautious. The snow around here has melted so I'm going to have to wait a few more weeks though.

But please! Do keep me posted on how your sled is doing with the new pump! Did they at least cover the pump and labor under warranty?

my '13 pro needed new plugs after running the break in oil through with the 1st tank. I got the DET code and the throttle cut out. New plugs, clean fuel and haven't had a minutes issue since. Running shell 91.
