2013 yz 450 Intake

Another newbie first snowbike is on order. I am putting this on a 2013 yz450, what are you guys doing for the air box on this thing, and were do i find a stater so i can run lights, and hand warmers, Yamaha and gytr don't seem to have one. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks (yes i'm a flatlander but i do get stuck out west every year for a week!)

Since you only come out west in the nipple deep powder for a week I wouldn't really put too much time into the airbox. Most of us over here mod them because so many of our days are puffy handbar deep days. I would throw on the Timbersled Pre-Filter and just run it.

You can find a stator at Trail Tech here. The grips a lot of people have used are the AME heaters but I've heard some good and not so good reviews on them. Maybe someone else can speak to their heating ability. Also, if you are in the market for a good lightbar, the Cyclops Penetrator 600 series with the full 25 degree wide beam is a great choice. I've also seen some nice Baja Designs lights but I'm not sure on the spread. All I know is the Cyclops does awesome and will burn the bark off trees.

NO STATOR

IF you run the AME/Cyclops 300 series combo, you dont need to do anything to the stator, it will run it stock. Secondly, the intake(s) behind the radiator shrouds can be trimmed back and covered with outerwears pre-filter cut to shape and glued in place.

super easy mod for the airbox, the YZ takes more works as because its forward facing, when it gets deep, it packs solid super fast. on my 11, so same bike, i did the timberlsed prefilter with no foam. works good until it starts getting fluffy. once it got deep, i just took the outer wings and the back of the airbox off. so its just the main cage that mounts to the frame. this works killer in even handlebar deep pow. BUT, its louder then anything i have ever road before. you MUST wear good foam expanding earplugs when setup like this or you WILL lose hearing fast. its not loud to anyone else but becuase your ears have a direct shot at the open intake... its bad.

also, take out the backfire screen under the filter, it likes to ice up and freeze over = bad running bike.

Here's what I did with my 2011 air box.

Spray Foam the stock air box inlets and cut excess to look better then I covered the spray foam with a thin coat of silicone to make sure its air tight.

I used 3 inch round frog skinz and drilled multiple little holes to be covered with the skinz. One big hole could easily be poked out so the small holes make it a little stronger.

I ride a lot of deeper snow and this has pretty much made the air box snow proof.

I have never seen anyone build a completely sealed airbox, and i really do not like pulling the yz one apart in the woods with so many bolts. from what I have seen the guys that just abandon the box and let snow come and go as they please have the least issues when you get super fluffy snow.

also, seeing that you are from the flathead, that snow definately doesnt seem to find its way in like snow down around bozeman. usually has a little higher water content so clumps more. We had a stupid deep spring (many days over the bars) and i gave up modding and stuffing and sealing fast. tore it all off and thew it in the pack one day and never looked back.

i can assure you that the YZ i speak of spent countless days in over handlebar deep snow and not one single issue with snow in the box, clogged filters, or powder ingestion. As far as the flathead not having "Fluffy" snow, i don't buy it.

I lived/rode in the flathead for a few years and get up to ride a couple times per season. its not a lot different, but its definately different. I actually miss it a lot, our snow here tends to get hammered by the sun and wind more so breaks down into tiny grainy snow a lot more often. snow in the flathead seems to stay actual "snow" flake formation a lot better.

We had a few locals running yz's down here who did them exactly like "torkd" did and found that you always had to dig the airbox out like 2x per ride if it was colder snow. again, its not the end of the world, but not the most fun, especially since it seems to be worse when its colder drier snow.

I also know on my shrouds without some silicone they seem to let stuff suck in around the joints. of the inner and outer airbox. might be where the issue arose from.

Thanks for all the input. Just to let you know about snow in the flatland not Flathead in the UP of Michigan just a few miles from lake Superior we got 300" this year with 50 consecutive days below zero temps we broke all kinds of records for snow fall and temps, we get any were from crystal type snow to waist deep puff, and yes hero snow for macking snow men. We rode sled from mid December till the end of April that is one of the longest seasons in over 20 years of riding. The only problem is are hills are kinds small.

I ran the 600 cyclops light and AME heated grips no need for upgraded stator.. Grips dont get that hot but do help alittle

As others have said block intake openings on shrouds with prefilter material that works well until you snag a tree or something.. I busted two shrouds off last year which cracked my air box.. I ran a pod type filter for a few trips which deletes alot of the air box, it worked good..

Im still getting fuel in my oil still trying to get engine temps warmer and might need a beter fuel controller to lean out mapping the yami tuner isnt cutting it

I started working on the 2015 Yamaha YZ450F intakes:

I expanding foamed the front of the intakes, and drilled some 1' holes and frog skinned the openings. Frogskinz. I also installed some adhesive backed foam around the non sealed edges of the air box.

interesting air box mods every week, no winner, just lots of versions because there is something in the neighborhood of 300 kinds of snow. ride'n around Montana there is about 200 versions each winter, by the time you ride in Eureka and Wisdom and Monarch and Cameron and Garnet and Rivelet, the worst air box packing snow last winter was not chin deep snow but 10:30 pm riding in cold temps and 10" in Wyoming, bad chit, new sleds were having trouble.

So when I see the " I absolutely never " post I understand lots of folks just don't get to far from home and experience a wide range of snow conditions.
