2012 Pro RMK vs Assault

looking at either the 012 Pro RMK or the Assault 155.Is there any big difference between the 2 besides the weight, ski stance and piggy back shock on the Assault?...Wondering how the Assault handles compared to the Pro in the same situation?.....Thanks in advance

I rode both back to back and thought they handled fairly similarly. The assault was a little stiffer, but the lack of a sway bar made up for the difference in the width. I also noticed that the assault was quite a bit better in the bumps and on landings. The track definitely trenched more on the assault though. I wish you could get a pro with the assault shocks.

When you took out the Assault, you said it trenched what track was on it?
For snowchecking a guy can get either the Competition track which will trench or get the Powder Track....I was told get the powder.

in 2011 they only came with the comp track....

If planning on heading west at least a couple times, I would go with the powder track.

Sounds like 19 pounds difference and 9 of that is the comp track, if you snow check and choose the powder track it looks like only 10 pounds heavier. (read that on one of the assualt rmk threads)

I read somewhere that the a-arms or something was mounted different in the assault. They also mentioned that the mounting holes were there so that it could be mounted like the rmk pro. WHAT I DID NOT UNDERSTAND was if that was the rmk assault or switchback assault they were talking about.

I too am trying to decide on which sled to snow check.

- Seems like lots of people said the 163 rmk pro handled nearly as good in the trees as the 155. Last year had tipped up rails on the 163, will this years handle much different? Prior to reading this I was sold on the 155.

- I go about 275 plus gear, thought the stiffer assault shocks would be better since I have seen many references to the rmk pro shocks being soft. Maybe just a re-valve would be enough or i would maybe have to also get heavier springs?

Seems like pretty much everyone despises the Comp. track. Why do they put it on this sled?

Because it's a competition track and it allows it to be run in the stock class for hillclimb competitions

If you aren't going to doing hillclimb racing is there any reason to order it? I'm going to snowcheck and I have the choice of the 2.4" also.

that track is awesome out here in california. we get alot of chunky snow and it does great in the powder i gurantee i can go anywhere a reg pro can go if not better, the susppension is way better and i like the stiffer wider set up.

well i decieded to take the Pro Assault 155 with the powder track..I only hit the mountains 3-4 times a year and with the better suspenion i can still ride around here.

The track choice really comes down to the snow conditions, riding style and personal preference. Set up snow, and or late season, less snow, trails, prairie, ditches and hill climbing leans towards the competition track. It has a stiff lug that doesn't really flex and is a digging machine until you hit something to grab and then hang on!

Deep and steep, more snow, early to mid season, and more flotation for mountain riding leans towards the powder track.

I think both tracks are versatile and very capable of doing all kinds of riding but it really seems like most guys like the powder track for the do all.

By the way, good choice.

Yes, sorry if I misstated my intentions. I'm going to go with the Assault RMK. I'm just a little unsure of which track to go with. I ride back country in Maine so not a lot of elevation but that doesn't mean I won't have deep snow, sometimes in very small trails that can be steep for short distances coming off lakes. The comp track sounds like a better fit but at the same time I don't want to take a 155 and make it terrible in deep snow just because of the track. I've been posting about this some already - sorry if I keep repeating myself!

I also will be likely calling on the sled to break trail for many miles. How will the belt hold up to this use? It seems like a mountain sled should be fine with this, but myy current XP seems to have a weakness in this area, and I'm looking for a sled that I don't have to worry about the belt as much.

I think you'll be just fine with the powder track. I'm planning on going with the powder track as well and I live here in ND. Plan on making out west a few times a year and the remainder of the miles will be put on here.

As far as belts, just add a little venting if you have any concerns. There are a ton of options out there for the Pro. Just do a search and you'll come across a bunch.

Is it common for people to have to vent these Pros because of belt heat?

there are some who vent and there are a lot who don't believe in it. I think you would be just fine with out it. I wouldn't even worry about the clutches the only thing I would be worried about is your buddies plotting to steal your sled unless they already own a PRO.

Propoodooassault

If You want to ride when it's fluffy and deep and still float a little then go with the(powdermk track option). For 90% of the days (we)you ride when the nieva is set-up, the as* ault 155" track is AMAZING, and those big stiff lugs chew through the pow too. The new ski shocks are sort of badassaswell, and as far as I can tell either '12 POL sled would be AMAZING. Go and ride your friend's '11 E-Tec 800 non-ported 154/163 narrow ski stance(with good fuel) and then make your decision. Blackandyellowblackandyellowblackandyellow:face-icon-small-win

Ha ha. No other Pros in our group, so I guess I might be in trouble. :)
